Owner description: Powderham Castle is the family home of the 18th Earl & Countess of Devon. It was originally built by Sir Philip Courtenay in 1391 and despite undergoing many transformations since surviving the ravages of the civil war in the 17th century, it has remained in the same family. Entertaining guided tours bring the fascinating history to life, you will find them engaging whatever your age. Discover secret doors, stunning architecture and even a haunted landing. We would advise you to allow at least 3 hours for your visit so you can take time to explore the many acres of gardens and grounds. The Walled Garden is home to our friendly Powderham pets, including Tessa the tortoise and Harry the donkey, and is a safe haven for our little visitors. Relax in the peaceful surroundings, from the beautiful Rose Garden, overlooking the deer park and Exe estuary to the Woodland Garden, with its stunning collection of trees. For the keener walker the breathtaking views from the foot of the Belvedere tower are very rewarding - you can see for miles and feel on top of the world! Before you leave visit the Powderham Country Store. Here you will find Toby Buckland's wonderful plant shop, the Powderham General Trading Co with its range of gifts, clothes and home furnishings and a fantastic food hall, bakery and butcher.

“Romantic setting.”
Reviewed March 11, 2013

Located on the banks of the Exe Powderham Castle has an enviable setting. There are guided tours which are very informative and it's obvious the guides enjoy their job. There is plenty to see on the ground floor but access to the first floor is via the grand staircase and its a ver grand, very long staircase. Again, a webcam would be useful. Don't be put off if you can only view the ground floor, you won't be disappointed. The grounds are a delight. Powderham is a venue for many outdoor events, antique fairs, classic cars etc. in the summer there are outdoor concerts. The best are the ones where you can take chairs and a picnic. Some people lay on the most elaborate picnics, take a camera. If you are really lucky, mad we were on one occasion, you can be sipping a glass of champagne, the deer grazing down by the river and then, as if on cue, the Orient Express steams past giving a toot. A goose bump moment. Light snacks are available in the Courtyard tea room and there is a restaurant in the Country Store. The restaurant has views across to the castle. There is a good plant shop. A House of Marbles and the Kitchen Store itself is excellent. Plenty of parking.

Powderham deserves to be packed. The summer shows are fab for children (and parents I confess) and the play area gorgeous in the summer with a picnic. Do go.

“Comfortable castle”

If there is such a thing. So nice to see the intimacies of a well kept home which is also used for many functions. Have been to concerts and walks and tours and shops and restaurant here many times. Something different to do!

“Boring”
Reviewed February 14, 2013

Sorry, but this impressive pile is presented in a very dull way without any great life. It's also very expensive. It would no doubt be nice to walk in the grounds on a good day, but unfortunately I was not blessed with such a day

“Powderham Castle”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

A really lovely castle to visit with your family. It seems to have everything! I went with my daughter, and I had a guided tour around the castle which was very interesting indeed. We then went on the ride around the castle which was great fun, and viewed the deer close up. The castle also has a cafe and gift shop. It also holds special events for Bonfire Night and Christmas, and has held a few 'gigs' there in the past. Very enjoyable.
