This cathedral is an extraordinary building that has to be seen. We visited on a Saturday morning and had pre-booked a tour that goes to roof level that is unforgettable and up to the very top of the Norman tower. Do this if you can manage stairs and have time.

“So Glad I Finally Made It!”
Reviewed May 6, 2014

I have been hearing about Exeter Cathedral since I took Art History in college. I have always had an affinity for cathedral architecture, and was so excited when I had the opportunity to make it to Exeter to see the cathedral. It is a beautiful cathedral, fairly close to the city center. There is limited parking around it, but if you get a spot, it's excellent and reasonably priced. Inside the cathedral is the fee for entrance. You're given a pamphlet of the church with information, and informed of tours that go on, free of charge. We were there on a day when they were not having the clerestory tour, but some of my party tagged along for the normal tour [I joined later]. There is so much to see in the cathedral, lot of awesome ornate detailing. The tour guide who showed us around was VERY friendly, and full of information. The preservation in the cathedral is wonderful, and even the area that was destroyed in WWII was tastefully remodeled, and left a seamless transition with the original structure.

Just outside the cathedral, there is the Serlo Café. We stopped in for tea and to fix our sweet tooth. The cathedral visit lasted about two hours, and it was a beautiful experience.

“Nice place to visit during evening song :)”
Reviewed April 28, 2014

As we just came by before the evening song, we were allowed to enter without paying admission fees. Even though we did not take part in the service, it was nice wandering around in the cathedral enjoying the atmosphere.

“Greedy and money grabbing”
Reviewed April 28, 2014

We visit cathedrals and churches fairly often, despite being atheists. Usually contributions are voluntary, here you are charged immediately. The cathedral is nowhere near as impressive as York for example.

“Outrageous entrance charge”
Reviewed April 27, 2014 via mobile

It's not only outrageous it's sad that the C of E has sunk to an all time low with such extortionate entrance fee. Little wonder the young are not inspired to engage with religion when they are met with such high costs to visit the house of God. This falls in line with the political interfering and the abuse scandals associated with the churches today. There is no charge at all in cathedrals in Spain or many other countries which makes one ask why Exeter? these Cathedral manage to exist without this ransom. I feel so sorry for a young family in today's world who are deterred from visiting a place of worship just to look, simply because of the greed portrayed by the church with such excessive charges.
