Beautiful old hotel (also called The Royal Clarence) right on Cathedral Square in Exeter. We booked a double room on their "summer scorcher" deal, which was £99 including dinner, bed and breakfast. The hotel is a very nice old building with smart and friendly staff. Our airconditioned room looked directly over the cathedral and was clean, modern and had everything you need - and the bed was very comfortable too. The dinner included in the deal was at the "cafe-bar & grill" - where there was a full menu and a "2 courses for £10.50" menu too. The deal was only valid for the set menu, or the cash equivalent. We chose to order from the main menu and pay the extra. The food was good, but nothing special - however it was very nice sitting outside the hotel overlooking the cathedral and its grounds. Breakfast was very nice with a good selection. Parking is a bit of a pain though- you have to park in the nearby multi-storey which costs about £11.00 for 24 hours. Overall though it's a good value hotel, and would stay here again.

I have stayed at this hotel a number of times, get a superior room with a Cathedral view and it is a great place to stay but the other rooms are rather dull and lack luster.

My biggest gripe is the staff who in the main are foreign and have difficulty understanding your order and continually apologize for stupid errors time and time again. Order a mint tea and I bet you will not get what you ordered. This is a real shame as eating in Michael's restaurant is a real treat and certainly the best food in Devon, just let down by the staff!

Room Tip: Get a superior room with a Cathedral view and you will be impressed, otherwise you will get an '...

Dear ‘Charles F’

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I’m sorry to hear that the service is not consistently high as we would expect. I have very recently joined the company with my key priority the service experience.

In terms of the bedrooms we have a wide variety of rooms as you would with any very old building, I am currently reviewing all the bedrooms here in Exeter with a view to making some improvements in the New Year.

Please contact me directly next time you stay, so I can introduce myself and welcome you back personally.

Many thanks

My room was rather small and the design on the sink and the surrounding apparel made having a shave an interesting occasion. The all important shower was good. The views from my room were torrid. Touring the hotel and the building was tremendous views of the cathedral (being in the Close). There is a small and well equipped gym and breakfast was good. I are in the cafe bar and the food was rather tasty, even though the service was slow. The staff at reception were excellent.

Room Tip: Make sure that you get one on the front!

We have stayed at Abode, or the Royal Clarence as it is known locally, twice before but this time we stayed for two nights. We used the 'summer scorcher' deal for both nights which is dinner bed and breakfast for two people for £99. We were a group of three couples. The standard grade room is perfectly acceptable, it is not gigantic but the beds are comfortable and the bathroom is functional. We asked nicely when booking and my husband and I were given a standard grade room that overlooked the cathedral and the green, which was a fantastic bonus. I believe that three of the standard rooms have cathedral views so it is well worth asking if one is available. The hotel is old, it is eighteenth century and the floors, walls and stairs can be sloping in places, but this adds to the eccentric charm of the building. Our room was plainly decorated and the rest of the hotel generally has a subdued décor that allows the building to be seen. Breakfast is now served in the fine dining restaurant and includes selections from both the buffet and the hot menu. The eggs benedict are really worthwhile and the service is friendly and helpful. We had a café bar dinner credit of 10.95 from the 'deal' we were on, but we were able to apply this to any of the café bar menu items or to dinner in the fine dining restaurant. We ate one evening in the fine dining restaurant taking advantage of this credit and the early dining offer, and we were delighted with the meal and the service. The second night we ate in the café bar and again were pleased with the food and the friendly service. The Well House Tavern alongside the hotel is part of the same set up and, I am told, has good beer.

The city was busy for the bank holiday and there was some noise from people outside the hotel, but this will be a feature of any city centre hotel where you can open the windows, and I much prefer to be able to open the windows!

The tea, coffee and biscuits in the room were much appreciated and the reception staff were very helpful to some friend of ours who needed to leave their cases at the hotel after checking out and before catching their train home. Parking, although a bit fiddly, was perfectly understandable and was very reasonable considering that we had the car in the car park for three days. This is not the hotel for a person who needs their car beside the door ready for them at all times, or a lone driver with mobility issues, but this is simply a function of its location and not something they can really do much about. Maybe valet parking would help some people but it wasn't an issue for us.

Overall we had a great time in Exeter, the free Red Guide tours leave from immediately outside the hotel and we could leave the car in the car park and enjoy the city on foot for the weekend. O

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room, rooms on the third floor are furthest away from any functions. We find the st...

Having checked in and out of a hotel further up the motorway, we were panicking trying to find a lovely hotel on a busy bank holiday! we luckily managed to stay at Abode, opposite the cathedral and had a fantastic night. Thanks to lastminute.com we managed to get a really good deal. The staff were fantastic as was the customer service. Having stayed there before, i know they have better rooms that what we had, but it was nice enough, but would probably upgrade next time. The breakfast was fab as was the champagne bar!! Expensive drinks, but worth it for the experience and for a special occasion. We only live 30 minutes away but would definitely stay there again, as the location is fantastic.

thank you all for your amazing customer service

Room Tip: definitely worth upgrading to get a larger room overlooking the cathedral

We were very excited about eating and staying at the Abode in Exeter. Situated in the Cathedral Square (directly opposite the Cathedral) and in the very lively café culture of Exeter and a minute away from the great shopping.

On arrival in the hotel we were not sure to view the hotel as quirky or plain tired and lacking in parking or helpful assistance. We could not fault the reception staff. On viewing the bedrooms we decided the hotel was definitely tired and actually quite small rooms.

The restaurant exceeded expectations with fantastic food and wine and a very relaxed setting. However it remains this a restaurant with a poor sidekick of a hotel

We have stayed here numerous times. Great location, staff, food and if you go for a front facing room (109 is good) beautiful views. A little noise at night due to the Well House tavern underneath, but does not detract from this gem of a hotel.
