Stayed as London Irish were playing Exeter Chiefs at Sandy Lane. Parked Car, Location fantastic; just a quick walk around the corner. Ate at pub after game. Very nice Steak meal. Lively atmosphere in the bar. Room was perfectly adequate for one night. Clean, ensuite, tv. tea making facilities.
Staff very helpful.
Bed not the most comfortable.
However, can't beat the location if going to rugby ground.

Despite some bad reviews, was quite impressed by the level of service offered not just to me but to fellow travellers. Staff at my client site mentioned that this pub was renown for good meals until quality suffered of late. I suspect this was before the change of ownership, though, so older reviews I've read aren't applicable to its current ownership.

Although I turned up early, the staff on duty were polite and courteous, showing me to my room and describing the amenities. The room itself - a separate structure built to the side of the pub - looked fairly recently decorated but was clean and bright, quite airy, with modern wooden furniture and wooden floor, in fitting with the overall decor of the pub. Large flat-screen TV in front of the bed and drinks-making facilities meant for a relaxing evening before eating. Although the fours rooms are next to the large pub car park (and just off the road), thick walls and double-glazed doors meant I was unaware of the amount of traffic until the next day - definitely a quiet spot. My room was also cleaned and tidied each day, so I returned back to quite a relaxing environment.

Wireless internet access (free) didn't extend to the rooms so I used my laptop in the bar - connection and speed were good initially, but a problem with the phone lines meant no access for the next few nights (the barman was quite apologetic about that and did his best to investigate, reporting a severed and wrongly reconnected phone line as the reason behind loss of connectivity).

To eat, I chose something simple on the first night yet still received quite a healthy portion on my plate. A new menu was due to come into force from the next day, and the successive meals I selected off that list were pretty good. Each night they also made a point of asking what I'd like for morning breakfast - quite the proactive approach!

One night was very busy - there was a birthday party on, yet I was still served food and drinks in good time. If the pub still had a bad reputation, it wouldn't have been the venue of choice for a celebration.

The overall experience indicated I was viewed as a valued customer and treated as such. If I'm back in that area again, they definitely WILL be getting business from me again.

I can't vouch for the rooms but based on a few visits to the restaurant, the quality of the food is not great, although if you stick to the really simple stuff you may be ok.
The service, however, was so astonishingly rude on our last visit that the entire trip was ruined. It was our single worst dining experience EVER (and we do eat out al lot).
