“Comfortable, close to city and great breakfast!”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

We stayed at the Telstar for 4 nights last week and had a comfortable stay. The telstar is about 10 minutes walk to the city centre. The breakfast was really good and there was ample choice. Ben was very helpful when it came to parking the car at the back of the hotel (it was quite difficult at times to park there - a bit overcrowded). Amy helped me when I needed a Doctor. Thanks to you both.

We are a couple in our 50's who travel quite a lot. We like to stay in different parts of the country and try to broaden our experience by moving away from the big hotels and give our custom to the new, smaller business venture. The Telstar was one of the most hospitable hotels we have stayed at....lovely young owners who were very accommodating with our requests, and gave the personal touch, from helping to park our car, to carrying our bags and making us feel very welcome. Lovely room, thoughtful unique touches, bottled water with vintage marble stoppers, chocolate shaker for your room coffee, really enjoyed our breakfast.....excellent choice and they make a different bread of the day! Ten minute walk into town, we will be staying again.

I recently stopped at the Telstar hotel in Exeter. Position wise it is very well placed, about a 10 minute walk into the centre of the city. The rooms are of an ample size and there is also a small outside terrace. The breakfast was excellent, with plenty of choice of cooked breakfast, also cereals, juices and fruit. There was even freshly prepared breads. Amy and her team made us all feel very welcome and were very accomodating with our requests. I would definately stay there again.

Room Tip: enjoy the freshly prepared bread selection at breakfast

We stayed for one night in a twin room with our pet dog. Very conveniently situated for the City centre and University. The hotel has more of a Guest House feel and the room was quite small but perfectly adequate for one night. The owners are friendly and accommodating and the breakfast was definitely one of the best we have had in a long time - much better than what you would get in a chain hotel. Would consider staying again should we be in the area again.

We stayed one night in Exeter with our dog. The room was tiny but cosy. Outside it looked out onto a little terrace with a wonderful view of the city. Room and terrace are a bit separate from the rest of the hotel which was very convenient for us, the dog could walk a round a little, my husband enjoyed his cigarette there. Staff is very friendly, breakfast good. Location also good.
We liked it.

Room Tip: Room looking out on the terrace is really nice esp when the weather is good.

We also stayed in room 10 and totally agree with Marios S (11/8/13): The room was spotless, comfortable and had a great view from the balcony. True there was nowhere to put toiletries and nowhere to hang your damp towel after showering, which I mentioned to the management. It would have been nice to have a biscuit or two included with the tea and coffee too. One point I feel I must mention is that some areas are exposed to the elements and, after a little rain, become a little slippery underfoot (but I guess this only applies when you are approaching from the car park or staying in rooms 9 or 10) so if you are a little unsteady on your feet ask for one of the other rooms and approach the hotel from the front entrance. We only stayed for one night and were perfectly happy with everything. A great place to stay if you want to explore Exeter. The staff were great and couldn't have been more helpful. As for noise, we didn't hear a thing: no partying, no 'toilet' noises and no other noises either!! Perhaps room 10 was in the best position!

We had hoped that this hotel would allow us to finish our 6 week holiday using B&B's on a positive note as we have had very few problems but we were very disappointed ... Firstly and mostly the walls are paper thin and I mean thin ....we spent 4 nights listening to people party, come home and keep partying in the early hours of the morning, people using the toilet right next to our bed heads ... Sharing everything they did in the toilet !!! Listening to them have sex and talk loudly on the phone to foreign countries very loudly ... Opening the window and shouting in the general direction would have been just as good... The porridge .... Well I think they need to understand if you open a packet of instant porridge then you have to cook it still not add Luke warm milk and present it with dried unmixed uncooked oats on the top .... And it was one of the most expensive B&B's we have stayed in .... So look around before you commit ... We were tired and weary and couldn't be bothered talking to management about it all ...

Ben G, Owner at The Telstar Hotel, responded to this review, August 16, 2013
Dear Guests,
At the Telstar guest house, we view a complaint as an opportunity to improve your stay with us. We see our job as looking after you for the brief time you are with us, and making your stay as pleasant as possible. Unfortunately we had no idea that the couple who left this review were experiencing any issues. They allowed their frustration to grow over their stay, and then vented their anger anonymously online. This is frustrating for us because it is too late for us to fix the problem and make their experience better. We could have stopped any noise no matter what time of night, and we certainly would have been happy to make a new bowl of porridge for them. If you do not tell us when there is a problem, and give us the opportunity to fix it, then you must take partial responsibility for your continued upset. We the owners/managers live on site and can be contacted 24 hours by use of our late bell, or a mobile number that we leave on a large, clear sign at reception specifically for any problems after 10pm at night. The Telstar bedrooms are all fitted with telephones, so you can contact us without getting out of bed if you need us, and we will be with you within a couple of minutes. It is rare, but occasionally a guest will consume too much alcohol and become a nuisance to others. We are onsite to fix this, and are very skilled at stopping this kind of behaviour. We do our absolute best at the Telstar; especially with regard to customer service (please check our other reviews for comments on our friendly and well trained staff). Leaving a bad review because you did not make a complaint is not helpful to anyone, least of all you. Please, please give us the chance to fix things. We are here to help. That is the service you are paying for after all. Best wishes,
The Telstar Guest House.
