I am wondering if I ate in the same restaurant as other reviewers who seem to rave about this establishment. We had the bar menu, midweek lunch. The food wasnt particularly inspiring. The portions tiny. I had braised beef and stilton cobbler which contained approximately eight small pieces of meat in a salty gravy with one small hard cobbler. The vegetables to share between four were not generous or imaginative.
Pudding was a little selection of 'goodies' which had seen better times - ie had been left around too long. We had coffee in the bar which was deserted and were told they were closing at 3.00pm. I left feeling quite hungry. When I told locals that I was not impressed they were surprised as it has such a good reputation. Maybe we chose a bad day as the restuarant was not busy.

love the service, ambiance and food. doesnt feel rushed, very personal experience, interestingly achieved considering the covers each evening. Food is just yummy, love the Devon menu and locally sought foods

Went for the two course Sunday lunch and as always an excellent meal cooked to perfection. staff very attentive. The pace of service good. You do need to book though as it gets very busy.

We visited the Jack in the Green yesterday for Sunday lunch and to celebrate our son's birthday. It was our first visit and we were very impressed. We enjoyed a pre-lunch drink on lovely squashy sofas whilst choosing our food before being taken into the dining room for lunch. The inn was very busy but there was a lovely ambience, all the staff were very polite and friendly and we couldn't fault the service or the food. All the food was beautifully presented and cooked perfectly. We highly recommend and will definitely go back.

Group of us gathered for lunch on way to Cornwall. Nicely cooked fish pie and veg although the beef cobbler would have benefited from some potato. No daily specials in evidence. The portions were not generous and prices we felt, were quite high for the menu on offer. However it was enjoyable and great to be out of a Devon hailstorm.
