Owner description: One of the most picturesquely sited fortresses in England. For over six hundred years, the castle has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy port of Dartmouth. John Hawley, privateering mayor of Dartmouth and the prototype of the flambouyant "Shipman" in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, began this fascinating complex of defences in 1388. Explore the passageways and climb to the top of the Gun Tower for stunning views out to sea. Child friendly and dog friendly.

Quite a walk but you can go by boat in the summer season, or take your car Well worth the effort, if only for the views. The café next door is excellent and the castle itself is well preserved. Would benefit from a guided tour or headphones but the automated film very cleverly starts when you enter a certain part. All in all a worthwhile visit.

Good value, interesting and well presented but be warned that if you're not steady on your feet you may not be able to see everything as some of the buildings and rooms weren't built to current access standards in those days.

Wonderful castle, with a beautiful church and a graveyard next to it, and right in front of the sea. The view of a sailing ship passing by on the sea, with the view of the castle, the cliffs and the church made our trip through Dartmoor.

Having been in the area before and visiting the wonderful St Petrox church right next door, I hadn't been in the castle before but did so for the first time last weekend.

okay so £5 for an adult might seem a lot but the castle extends much further than you think and is well laid out in terms of information etc.

there are some steep steps however my 81 year old mother in law and 79 year old father in law coped well.

certainly well worth a visit
