“Smaller than I thought it would be”
Review of Dartmouth Castle

Owner description: One of the most picturesquely sited fortresses in England. For over six hundred years, the castle has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy port of Dartmouth. John Hawley, privateering mayor of Dartmouth and the prototype of the flambouyant "Shipman" in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, began this fascinating complex of defences in 1388. Explore the passageways and climb to the top of the Gun Tower for stunning views out to sea. Child friendly and dog friendly.

We arrived here having visited another local castle and managed to get a parking space right outside Dartmouth castle and on a day when the parking meters were not working either. We went into the ticket office and behind the ticket desk we were stunned at the amazing view across the harbour entrance. We proceeded downstairs, and there was a room full of cannons. I was a bit disappointed as there was not much to see in this room and wondered if we had come all this way for nothing, but then we went to the gun tower which is on several levels. It is amazing to read the history of the tower, seeing the original floor level. There are some fantastic views from the gun tower over to Dartmouth harbour.

“A fascinating place to visit”
Reviewed October 28, 2013

Loved this castle. It was good to see old guns still in place which gave a very good impression of what life must have been like. The descriptive plaques were very informative. I'd recommend this fort to anyone visiting the area.

A beautiful spot - lovely place to walk and stare out to sea, or look back at the Dartmouth cottages and harbour scene.

“Really lovely place to visit”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

Great place to visit, we walked up from Dartmouth, although there is a car park, for those who close to drive, but the walk is lovely. The castle and gun tower are well worth the entrance fee, the staff are great with a good knowledge, to make our day we saw a sea lion on the shores edge fantastic..
The ice cream was great and the tea shop has some free guides for walks in the area. A great way to spend a morning or afternoon, highly recommend.
