Review of Dartmouth Castle

Dartmouth Castle

Attraction details
Owner description: One of the most picturesquely sited fortresses in England. For over six hundred years, the castle has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy port of Dartmouth. John Hawley, privateering mayor of Dartmouth and the prototype of the flambouyant "Shipman" in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, began this fascinating complex of defences in 1388. Explore the passageways and climb to the top of the Gun Tower for stunning views out to sea. Child friendly and dog friendly.

“Stunning location”
Reviewed October 27, 2012

Took a slow amble along the river from Dartmouth, and explored the castle in our own time. Stunning views of the estuary, and interesting exhibitions of the castle history and canons etc. Took a fishing boat back to town to complete a nice morning

lovely walk from the centre(about a mile)This is where we defend the town from attacks by sea !
Cant recommend the `stewed` tea in the small cafe though.
Well worth a visit.

“not an easy place to visit”
Reviewed October 22, 2012

It is worth planning your trip here to avoid problems with access and parking. We drove to Dartmouth, hoping to take the boat to the Castle, but couldn't park anywhere. We then drove to the Castle itself but there were no standard or disabled spaces in the car park nor the access road. It would have been possible to park quite some distance away and walk, but my leg injury earlier this year meant that wasn't possible. We were looking forward to our visit and were very disappointed, especially considering the good reviews on this website. I recommend going early if you need to park nearby, or going by boat. If going from Dartmouth go early and make sure the Park & Ride is operating.

“Lots of History”
Reviewed October 19, 2012

Didn't like the high fee to get in and explore the Castle. The walk around was limited though interesting. The walk back to town is well worth the effort & only takes 20-30 mins.
