I recently took my wife to the Royal Castle and stayed in a River View room.
On our arrival there was a chilled bottle of champagne in our room directly overlooking the small inner harbour. The staff were always pleasant and attentive and made our stay one to remember. Thank you very much.! Looking forward to seeing you again.

Room tip: Go for the River View, a bit pricey but stunning views!!

We've used the royal castle several times over the years and it's always good. As a large party of male golfers, 27 of us, it's difficult to find somewhere to use where we're not going to disturb people. The RC is perfect as we used the private dining area upstairs. We went for the carvery option, pork and beef. The food was absolutely spot on, fantastic produce and loads of it. Veg, gravy, pigs in blankets, and crackling was on the table and constantly replenished. The staff were absolutely superb, we're a tough audience but they dealt with the room really well. If your looking for somewhere to have a large gathering, this is the place to go. We will be back next year, keep up the great work.

The hotel itself is beautiful, with an amazing river view that lasts as far as the eye can see, and the room was quite smart and comfortable.
However, our trip to the hotel for 2 days was spoilt when my partner found that he had 2 scratches (1 was very deep) across his car that had been parked along with other guests' cars in a dodgy looking space round the corner from the hotel that is supposedly used as the hotel car park. Initially when we arrived we were told that our car would be parked close by but were not told exactly where (which understandably caused concern for my partner who takes great pride in his car.) We assumed that this was some sort of hotel car park as it stated 'free parking' on the website, but found it not to be the case. There is a strange system attached to this hotel whereby the guest cars are parked in rows just inches apart, and if one car needs to be brought out for a guest, all the other cars are brought out in order to get this particular car out and then laboriously reparked. There are no CCTV cameras there, so of course if something goes wrong then nothing can be proved, but it really upset my partner who had made a point of saying he was uncomfortable with his car being taken away and put somewhere he was unaware of (because of the likelihood that it might be damaged) and was reassured it would be safe. I notice that another reviewer on this site mentions how fantastic it is to be able to leave your car to be parked at the hotel car park, but please be aware there is no such thing - it's just a space of empty ground round the back of some shops. The cars therefore are not being kept an eye on by the hotel, so it is unsurprising that damage is done to the cars and no one can prove anything (although the space left between my partner's car and the car in front was only a matter of inches, so it was obvious that whoever had parked the car had tried to squeeze through the gap and scratched it on the way. When we raised this with the woman on reception, she assured us twice that the manager would come out and speak to us, but this never happened. After a day driving along small country roads on Tuesday, my partner's car was scratched on either side from brambles and therefore he didn't think he had much of a case to press the hotel on the original scratches afterwards. This really spoilt our short holiday for us, and my partner was even more shocked when we arrived back on Tuesday evening to the hotel to find that we had 'lost our space' to park the car. Once again reception assured us that our car would be parked 'close by' but didn't tell us where this woul be. After dinner we went for a quick walk to try and find the car and found it parked in a space between 2 shops a few minutes away. Of course, once again the worry that the car might be damaged was at the front of our minds, although at least this time there appeared to be CCTV installed. I find it ludicrous that a hotel which charges so much per night can not be held responsible in any way for the damage done to a car that is in their care. The hotel doesn't seem to understand that offering a valeting service should mean that the car is kept in a safe space which is cctv monitored, either on hotel grounds, or if that is not possible, at least guest cars should be given permits in a proper car park (there was one near the hotel).
Very sad and disappointing end to our trip to Dartmouth.

Room tip: choose a river view room for a lovely view of the River Dart and the harbour.

We were after Sunday roast which is served in the restaurant, other meals are served in the bar, We had a dog with us which is allowed in the bar but not the restaurant. They found us a separate room, the old library. It was like being special guests! The service could not have been better and the Sunday roast was excellent.
