“lovely character hotel”
Reviewed December 3, 2009

we thoroughly enjoyed our recent stay and can only surmise that the hotel has had a complete overhaul since the previous reviews, as our room was modern, clean and well furnished but the pièce de résistance was the double jacuzzi in the bathroom it was more a swimming pool than a bath, excellant! Yes there are creaky floor boards, uneven floors but it is a 17th century building!
the food was good quality and the sunday carvery (3 courses £16.95) was great value for money, all the staff were very pleasant and helpful.
we will definately stay there again.

Knowing this area well, we had always promised ourselves that we would stay here one day. We stayed in July this year; loved it, so returned for a second visit.
The welcome from the staff on check in sets the tone for the stay.
Room was comfortable with a great view. The food, both in the first floor restaurant and in the bar, is excellent. And it's not overpriced.
Earlier negative reviews suggest that the rooms are in need of refubishment. There does seem to be a programme of renewal going on. We were more than pleased with the 2 in which we have stayed.
And to those who say it is over priced I'd say, check out the special offers and deals.....
This place is the complete antithesis to bland, souless, coporate hotels - it's comfortable, friendly and very, very, welcoming.
We will book again - the sooner the better!!!

I have just returned from a two night stay at The Castle Hotel with my wife, on arrival we were upgraded to a river view room (14) as it was available for our first night, and were moved back to our original booked room (10) for the second night. The staff were all fantastic, friendly and efficient and even moved our luggage between rooms while we where out for the day. The rooms are excellent with all the amenities that you could require, the houskeeping being done twice a day and the tea and coffee facilities re-stocked. The valet parking is an excellent service and although we stayed in November parking is still difficult in Datmouth, it was so relaxing having your car taken at the door and returned when you needed it, and no parking fees to pay. The breakfast is fantastic and sets you up for the rest of the day. All in all a most enjoyable stay and I lookforward to returning soon.

I've stayed here before when I had an indoor room looking out over the stairwell - not good for throwing open the curtains in the mornings with your jimjams on (or not). This time I had a marvellous room overlooking the harbour. Snug, in good order, with a firm bed and pillows - very comfortable. The hotel rooms have been refurbished, and on the basis of my room it's been done with care, professionalism and insight.

This is still very much a local pub/hotel used by lots of locals. The food's great. The mussels were the best I have ever eaten, and I've eaten more than a few. The regular curry night on Tuesdays draws many Dartmouth people in, all of whom must leave with expanded waistlines if mine was anything to go by. Good beers too. Oh, and very good service.

Breakfast? Lovely. Locally sourced bacon and sausages, excellent eggs. Good Haddock apparently. Very nice waitress.

This hotel is a shining example to the sector of how to do the hotel business well.

Just returned from a 3 night stay at The Royal Castle with our 7 year old son, this was our first visit and we will definitely return. Our family room was beautifully furnished, spacious with every comfort you'd need and expect, unfortunately, we were on the 4th floor (57 steps) so for anyone not fit enough it was a heck of a climb! Didn't pay the extra for a river view as were out most of the day but next time we would as didn't realise the beauty of the quay. Breakfast excellent with a good choice and taken in lovely dining room with views over the river. No kids menu offered in either of the ground floor bars which was disappointing, only offered in the main first floor a la carte so we ate out each evening, that was the only negative point.

We stayed just one night in September and although the hotel is full of quirks and character we were hard-pushed to fault anything. We were upgraded to a river view room and found sitting by the window watching the world go by very relaxing. The was just the right mix of character and contemporary and very clean, we even had a jacuzzi bath which was fab after a long day walking. The atmosphere in both the (quite different) bars was very friendly and up-beat and we even got to dance at the Celebrity Theme night! We didn't eat in the evening at the hotel but the food looked amazing and we will be tempted next time. Although the hotel is central we weren't woken by street noise in the morning (thank goodness for the alarm clock!). The breakfast hostess was a wonderful host, making us feel very welcome and the owner also came out to chat over breakfast which is a lovely, if old-fashioned touch these days.

In summary - we loved our short stay and will definitely be back!

Very impressive building.

Restaurant and bar fantastic. Only one downside was the layout of the building meant that the room was noisy, this said, we would stay again.

Valet parking was a nice touch.
