My husband wished to mark his 70 th birthday in a place with a cosy friendly bar , a good selection of real ales and seafood on the menu .I wanted a fabulous room , a non corporate hotel and good food. This hotel ticked every box! The room ( no 7 ) was not huge but spacious enough, a wonderful bed , excellent bathroom with posh toiletries and a jacuzzi....tasteful but not bland decor and a fabulous view of the quay. The staff are outstanding and provide superb service from the way your car is taken care of , the cleanliness of the rooms and the service in the bar and restaurant. The breakfasts are amazing .....high quality food and loads of choice. We particularly appreciated little touches like the owner circulating at breakfast for a short chat and the note left in the car just as we left thanking us for staying. The building is historically interesting and in a prime location .......we could not have chosen better .....oh .... and the sun shone virtually the whole time we were there.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a view of the quay and bear in mind that this hotel does not have a lift.

Many thanks for your lovely review - we are of course delighted you so clearly enjoyed your birthday celebration! The staff work hard to ensure that all guest needs - and expectations - are exceeded, so it's lovely for them when compliments such as yours, show we are getting it right! Do hope we will see you again another day. Regards from us all.

Just returned from a three day long weekend stay to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. From the handing over of our car keys on arrival for the valet parking, to the loading of our car outside the hotel when leaving everything had been perfect. The hotel is full of character and is extremely comfortable. We had a river facing room which was superb with one of the most comfortable beds that I have ever slept in. We had complimentary champagne and flowers and enjoyed a first class dinner at a set table overlooking the river. All the staff, without exception, were extremely courtious and polite and a credit to the management. We were made to feel most welcome and the memory of our stay will remain with us for a very long time. We hope to return to Dartmouth again, and will have only one choice of where to stay. Thank you all so much for a memorable stay.

Wow, what can I say! 'Thank you' seems so inadequate for such a wonderful review. Delighted you enjoyed your stay with us so much. The owners and the team have worked hard over the years creating the right fixtures, furnishings, atmosphere, food, beverage and above all - service. I can only hope we can deliver just as well the next time you visit! Regards from all of us.

Some people in my party paid the same as me for a lovely spacious room. I'm afraid mine was rather pokey if comfortable. It's worth checking on room quality before booking and try and get one overlooking the river. Having said that, it did not really detract from the enjoyable stay. The staff throughout the hotel are friendly and helpful. The bar is warm and welcoming and all the food excellent. Nice to see a British hotel putting in effort for its guests. Well done and thank you.

Room Tip: Get one overlooking the river.

Many thanks for your lovely review, so glad you enjoyed your stay - as you say the river view rooms are that little bit bigger, with additional facilities, and not to forget that wonderful view! The staff here certainly strive to deliver, and exceed, expectations in terms of food and service, so thank you for the comment, we are always glad it's appreciated. Do come and see us another day. Best wishes from all the team.

As good or better than any top London Hotel at half the price. I have stayed here twice now. The rooms are carefully thought out with full amenities. The upgrade rooms are worth it. I have stayed in the crows nest top floor rooms and love to hear and see the seagulls in the morning. Staff are friendly and attentive. Food is excellent. Internet works well. Parking in Dartmouth is always tricky but hotel will take care of parking for you or provide parking permit. No complaints with this hotel always get good value.

Thank you very much for your super review, we are all delighted you were so pleased with your stay. In particular the staff have worked hard to ensure wifi is available to all our guests - a non-too fast broadband service to rural areas, plus the challenge of an historic building with lots of rooms and thick walls, has given the team quite a headache - so your comment was very well received! We look forward to seeing you again in the future. Best wishes from all of us.

The Royal Castle Hotel is one of my favourite places to stay and to eat, but on the last two occasions i have been disapointed, although i wasnt staying at the hotel on these occasions i still wanted to visit the Galleon Bar for Sunday lunch. The first time the wait for lunch after ordering was well over half an hour and it was early so i couldnt see the reason for the delay and it was fairly quiet. I put it down to perhaps staff shortage and forgave them ! The second occasion however is what prompted to me to write this review. Again after ordering the wait was over 35 minutes and then a waitress came to explain that our tables had been mixed up, the table we sat at was extremely sticky and we were early so i felt it was from the previos night. When the waitress i asked to wipe it came to do so, it was obvious she had been crying not ideal for a relaxed sunday Lunch ! After a further wait our lunch finally arrived. The lunch was as always lovely although we had to ask for sauces to accompany our meats, by the time they arrived we were nearly finished! I suppose the reason for this review is not because i want to put people off going to the Royal Castle but to prompt the Royal Castle to pay attention to detail as they always used to.

Please be assured we will not rest on our laurels! All comments are welcome as it ensures that we continue to strive in delivering the best possible service to each customer. I'm afraid I cannot offer any explanation for the slow service on your first visit - our staff handovers give no indication of any issues that day. With regard to a tearful member of bar staff, one team member had received distressing news, and although offered time off, preferred to continue to work. Apologies if her demeanour impaired the enjoyment of your meal. I do hope we will see you again in the future. Kind regards from all of us.

We have stayed at this hotel twice and on each occasion we have thoroughly enjoyed our stay. On both occasions we have enjoyed the themed evening of murder on the river Dart and I can tell you that this is very entertaining and enjoyable evening. We have enjoyed wonderful food in both the bar and the restaurant upstairs and breakfast is perfect. The rooms are great especially river view they are a little expensive but I think worth it.

Room Tip: Room 15 absolutely superb

Wonderful location, having their own car park is a huge plus as parking in Dartmouth can be very difficult to find. The atmosphere and decor are very tasteful and old English with wood beams etc. The food is very good and very good value, staff are always courteous. Try the daily specials like the carvery, curry night etc. Nice selection of ales and beers. Have stayed here many times and have always had a very good stay.
