Another visit to a lovely historic hotel in the main part of Dartmouth. Bar which is well frequented by locals serves tasty food and good beer in a cosy setting. Hotel accommodation itself is very comfortable. River view rooms are really a must but do demand quite a premium and quite expensive during peak months. Could be better equipped with DVD rather than optional X Box. Staff very helpful and friendly. Car valet service a boon as traffic wardens are active! Breakfast tasty and plentiful with nice views from the dining room. Didn't eat supper there this time but did last visit and no complaints! Best deals to be found after Xmas period when fires in bar very welcome. A good base to look around the south coast and Dartmouth has a few good eateries to try as well.

Thank you so much for your lovely review - we are delighted you enjoyed your break with us. As you say the river view rooms do come at a premium, however, they do usually sell out first, with many repeat visitors requesting the same rooms as before. Many thanks for mentioning the website special offers - that's the time to book, but get in quick! Hope to see you again in the future. Best wishes from all the team.

Just returned to the snowy north, having spent 5 days at the Castle. Atmosphere, room, staff and food all excellent. Due to bad weather we stayed an extra night and everyone was very helpful. Thanks to Nigel and his team. We will be back!

We stayed three nights and enjoyed every minute, the staff were excellent and helpful the bar was friendly and cosy with good wine, beer, and food. This was a happy occasion as it was also part of my wife Margaret's special Birthday. The weather was not very good but we did not seem notice as we having a such a good time. We booked two river view bedrooms one with a cot for the baby as mummy had to return to the room early, but there was plenty of activity on the river to observe. We look forward to a return visit.

Room Tip: We booked two rooms both river views and excellent

Many thanks for your lovely review. Delighted the weather didn't dampen your experience here. As you say, there's always plenty going on out on the river even at this time of the year. Do hope you enjoy many more happy family breaks with us in the years to come. Best wishes from all the team.

We returned to the Royal castle for our anniversary (belated) it was everything we could have wished for - we were given a free room upgrade to one of their river view rooms, on arrival there were flowers, champagne and hand made truffles awaiting us and the room was amazing, we were treated impeccably and nothing was too much trouble, the attention to detail makes this hotel stand out from the rest, the staff are very attentive, the food was delicious and the atmosphere is wonderful - for us, a truly special place that we just love sooooo much and love coming back to.

Room Tip: Room 1 has double jacuzzi bath...............great fun and a good place to drink the champagne!!

I AM ABASHED THAT IT HAS TAKEN ME SO LONG TO PLACE THIS REVIEW SO MY APOLOGIES ROYAL CASTLE.

We went to the Royal for lunch on a couple of occasions at New Year when we rented a house around the corner. The weather was freezing, but not in front of that amazing fire, drinking local beer, eating gorgeous food, and a waiter who kept piling the logs on the fire. The food was freshly cooked, and we all enjoyed it immensely. We would love to stay, but will never trade the rented cottage we have around the corner. But thank you and we will see you in April

This was our 2nd stay at the Royal Castle, we had our honeymoon there in 1973. The atmosphere then enchanted us and that has not changed. If you like buildings steeped in character then you will not be disapointed. The bedrooms are well appointed and comfortable and if you choose a river view there is plenty to see. We had dinner in both bars and the main dining room and in every case the service and quality was without fault. If you ask for the full english breakfast better not to eat the night before! Even in the winter Dartmouth is a pleasent town with none of the tacky bits that a lot of sea-side resorts suffer from. Easy to drive out to other areas but nice to wander around the side streets. All the staff at the hotel were first class and we enjoyed every moment of our stay. It wont be 40 years before we come again.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra for the riverview.

Didn't stay there but the food in the bar was a definite step up from pub grub - and the Doom Bar bitter was excellent. A top notch hotel with the atmosphere of a good pub. I seem not to be able to submit this without a 200 character minimum. What more is there to say - it was good.

So pleased you enjoyed our bar food - not to forget the Doom Bar bitter! Sorry about the 200 character minimum, it must a trip advisor requirement, not ours. Hopefully you will return to savour our food, beer and atmosphere. Kind regards, from all of us.
