The Royal Castle in Dartmouth, everything about this Hotel is just idyllic, from the location, food, and accommodation. They not only accept dogs, but they also make them very welcome. We have visited the Royal Castle many many times not just for the amazing food, but for the roaring log fires in the cold winter months. It was the first time we had ever stayed over night as it is quite expencive, so it was a very special treat. It overlooks the old harbour right in the middle of the town just perfect for browsing around the many lovely little shops.

Room Tip: If you can afford it get a room overlooking the habour

We booked 3 nights at The Royal Castle during the very busy regatta week at the end of August. I was not quite sure what to expect as the reviews of the hotel seem very mixed, but the hotel very much exceeded my expectations. When we arrived, the town was extremely busy so we pulled up outside the hotel and I ran in to ask for directions to the car park. I was immediately helped by a lovely young man who told me not to worry about the car at all. He unloaded all our luggage, informed the parking warden that the car would be moved shortly, took our luggage up several flights of stairs to our room and parked the car for us! I later learned that he had only just joined the hotel that week, so full marks to him for excellent service. Jessica on reception was also extremely helpful with our booking and thoughout our stay as were all the staff we came into contact with. Our room (15) was really nice. It was very spacious and comfortable with a lovely large bathroom and a pretty view over the harbour. The hotel had a lovely atmosphere and was an oasis of calm in the midst of the chaos outside! Thankyou very much for a really lovely few days!

Room Tip: I would definately book the harbour view rooms

My whole family, young and old, simply loved the hotel. Excellent location, terrific rooms, very warm, approachable and friendly staff and superb food for breakfast and dinner. Unhesitatingly recommend it.

Loved the quirky, character-filled interior with old paintings and curios adorning the stairs and landings - even a real bearskin rug! Our room up in the 'gods' was fab, with sloping eaves, a creaky old four-poster and a spa bath. We saved quite a bit of money by not opting for a harbour view... then were delighted to discover we had a lovely view of the church and rooftops rising up the cliff at the back.

Staff were very friendly and location was great. Just one minus point - the hotel's ground-floor is really little more than a bustling, touristy pub without much charm. Fine for a quick drink, and there are plenty of other nice places nearby.

I must admit I have yet to stay in this Hotel, but lunch in the restaurant or in the bar is a must when I visit Dartmouth.

The bar has a lovely atmostphere and is very popular - get in for early morning coffee and keep your seats for lunch!

The staff are all very polite and helpful and its lovely to see Nigel Way flounce (yes flounce - sorry) into the bar to greet his customers - regulars and holiday makers - everyone feels welcome.

Prices are sensible, snacks and main meals available and naughty desserts to die for.

Thank you Royal Castle Hotel - you make my visits to Devon a happy experience.
