Description: THE DOLPHIN Inn is quickly emerging as the place to be !. Situated on Market Street, Dartmouth, the new Dolphin has an increased light, airy and welcoming interior, following a detailed and carefully planned renovation. Open from 11am to 11pm, Monday to Sunday, the business remains family-run with The warmest of welcomes for locals and tourists alike. Brother-in-laws John Jones and Glenn Powell have taken great lengths to ensure that the Inn has retained the classic features of a seaside pub, but one that is laid back and chilled in the services it offer to fit a wide-range of tastes. Sections of plush leather seating add a new sophisticated look to parts of this treasured and lovingly restored pub. With Manager John Pope – aka Geoffrey Boycott – using his great persuasive skills local boatbuilders and salvage masters have donated time and pieces in an attempt to bring some real local history to the pub – big thanks to all . As part of their ongoing push for higher standards, the pub owners have brought in a range of drinks, coinciding with the launch of a their very own brewed beer called Whaler Ale, brewed at their brewery – Bridgetown Brewery – situated on the river in the sister pub the Albert inn in Totnes.

Four of us were visiting Dartmouth for the afternoon and we stopped at the Dolphin Inn to have a late lunch. The food was good (crab sandwiches which came with salad and fries and steak ciabatta which also came with salad and fries). It was all very good - and freshly made. The portion sizes were large and it was good value for money. Good real ale as well.

Would return on our next trip to Dartmouth.

As recent hungry travellers to beautiful Dartmouth, we arrived in the town at lunchtime, and chanced upon the Dolphin Inn. The bar itself was quite pleasant, and the warm day meant that the doors were opened invitingly, allowing a pleasant breeze. We were pleasantly served with a few drinks whilst we browsed the extensive bar menu. As we were in Dartmouth, I couldn't resist the thought of fresh Moules Mariniere in a white wine and cream sauce and skinny fries as a side dish, and my wife decided that the char-grilled burger was her choice of lunch. However, we were disappointed at a particularly long wait of 35mins in a bar that only had 6 people in it. Anyway, the large saucepan of fresh mussels eventually arrived with a surly male 'cook' who didn't smile nor wish us bon apetit!....Worse was to come...the large shells contained the smallest embryonic mussels I have ever had the misfortune to be served, and it would be no exaggeration to say that 60% of the mussels were totally empty! The sauce was quite nice though, it was a "mussel flavoured soup" rather than the dish I ordered, and at £10, not worth the money. My wifes burger arrived 5 mins after my mussels, and to be fair, it wasn't too bad, but very microwaved rather than freshly grilled we suspect. The real ale was good, it must be said, and the barmaid was quite pleasant, but we settled the bill and left sooner than we would have liked without bothering to complain, as the surly 'cook', who scooped up the dishes without even asking if we had enjoyed, wouldn't have cared less anyway judging by his attitude. We suspect that he knew that the dish of mussels were small and mostly empty, and may even have been keeping the mussel meat back for the ""bouillabaisse"", that was also on the menu!!??
Would we go back to the Dolphin Inn?.....certainly not for food! But maybe for a drink on Market day! To be fair, it could have been an '''off day"" in the kitchen, but a smile and a pleasant attitude doesn't cost a thing and is the backbone of a small catering business!
