My family and I have just returned from a long weekend break at Hillfield Cottages and Country House. We stayed in Coachmans Cottage, one of about 30 beautiful self-catering apartments and cottages at Hillfield.
The whole complex is a haven of tranquility and luxury. Our cottage was very tastefully decorated and had everything you could wish for when self-catering. Travelling with our two year old son, the children's play area was a big hit with its wooden jungle-gym, slide and swings. We loved the fact that the complex is considered a "free range kids area" with very little traffic and a lot of outdoor space. However, the complex isn't aimed at people with children only, many of the other guests we met were couples without children wanting a lovely space to stay.
One of the best features of Hillfield was the owners - Caroline and Michael. They were both very friendly and helpful. They run a little shop on site that stocks the essentials that you always forget and went out of their way to specially order in a specific type of milk that we wanted.
The cottages themselves are about 2,5miles from the centre of Dartmouth and you do need a car to get to them, but it is only about a 5 minute ride to the centre of Dartmouth. Although you are away from the town centre, you get the benefit of a lot of open space and wonderful views and tranquility - great at the end of the day.
We cottages are near to a number of the best beaches in the area as well as countless parks and activity centres. Unfortunately the weather wasn't great during our holiday, but we did drive to the famous Blackpool Sands (about 15 minute drive) and enjoyed the view. The Hillfield website is a treasure trove of information about the area and things to do, which has very helpfully been printed out and placed in each cottage - four big files of information!!
My husband played a round of gold at Dartmouth Country Club (about 5 minutes drive away) and found it to be both beautiful and challenging - well worth going to.
Another thing worth doing is a ferry ride across the harbour from Dartmouth to Kingswear and a ride on the steam train from Kingswear to Paignton.
If you stay at the cottages in summer or plan to spend the day in Dartmouth we would recommend using the Park and Ride facility near to the cottages as parking is very limited in Dartmouth itself and you can only park for a maximum of 4 hours.
We will definitely be going back to Hillfield as it is one of the best sself-catering cottages we have stayed in with great staff.
