Once again we called in to eat a Sunday lunch at The Royal Castle. Wonderful views over the river Dart. Food was good but getting on the expensive side, about £25 a head for meal plus glass of wine. Although still good it has deteriorated since our last visit about 9 months ago. There seems to be a new restaurant manager and different waiters. One of the waiters we dealt with was excellent but unfortunately another one was totally useless and left dirty plates on our table for a quarter of an hour until we had to ask for them to be removed . The manager an amicable fellow spent most of his time fawning over attractive lady diners at the expense of the rest of us. I suspect the deterioration of service is down to his example. Still good but could do better.

We have eaten here several times as we live locally. The service is helpful and friendly (it used not to be!). We go elsewhere if we want fish - the Seahorse, Taylors etc - but this is our favourite place if we want steaks. The atmosphere is relaxed and we can always be sure of a good evening

I took my wife here for lunch on Friday. However we have been there for lunch and dinner on numerous occasions over many years. An excellent menu with superb food perfectly cooked. The menu always has a varied choice and contains local produce. Front of house are attentive yet discreet. The dining room has wonderful views across the Dart and is perfect for romantic occasions such as anniversaries.

As a birthday treat, we went for dinner in the Grill room at the Royal Castle. We booked the round table by the window, which is a great location and gives you a good view out over the boat float.

Deep-fried whitebait kicked us off, followed by the Chateaubriand.

The service was excellent and after a small mix-up with the white wine order (a glass was brought instead of a bottle) the staff quickly rectified it and gave us the large glass free. Excellent service (others please take note)!

The whitebait was spot on, although quite a large starter which meant we just had the two courses. The atmosphere was good and ideal for a special occasion or family meal out. The Chateaubriand was delicious, but the chef could be a little more adventurous. Essentially it is the same food you get in the bar downstairs, so was served with the usual chips. I would like to see the chef up the game a little upstairs and offer more sophisticated fare - I'm sure there used to be two separate menus (with upstairs attracting a premium price, but I may be mistaken). Anyway, I wasn't disappointed and thoroughly enjoyed the meal.

Sadly I am not writing this from Dartmouth, but will certainly be back here next year to see Nigel and gang.

We are often reluctant to visit The Royal Castle Hotel for pub food as it is always so very busy and noisy but maybe that's it's very success as it means there is a fast and constant turnover which can mean There is a decent quality there ......and it's popular with locals and visitors alike. On the odd occasions we do dine there it is usually pretty good ( although we have vivd memories of a simply dreadful curry night there a while ago).On our most recent visit we were in search of a late Sunday afternoon roast and the Royal Castle delivered ...and some.
Our plates were heavy under the weight of very ample servings of Devonshire roast sirloin of beef with all the trimmings. Local meat being the nectar of the gods, our only gripe was the mean serving of roast potatoes which were few and small. We were served promptly and we enjoyed our meal immensely.
