Owner description: Clovelly, North Devon. World famous for our cobbled, traffic-free street, donkeys, sledges and historic harbour. The stunning views, peaceful tranquility and cobbled, traffic-free, high street of this world famous fishing village, built into a cleft in a 400' high cliff, tumbles its way down past whitewashed cottages festooned with flowers to the tiny working port. It is famous for its donkeys, which traditionally carry goods up the hill; sledges bring things down. There are links with Charles Kingsley, Turner, Dickens and the Spanish Armada.

Clovelly is a nice small town. You pay £ 6.75 each adult for entry leading you first through the visitor centre. interesting to read all the different reviews. I liked the beautiful picturest houses and yes, the way down or back up is heavy. But that's the magic in it, no?
If you are closeby, a visit is worth.
I wouldn't take a hour drive just to see it though.

It's very picturesque and quaint and the villagers have sleigh type devices to carry stuff about with but honestly, the walk back up the hill is (as John Barnes says) sheer hell. Don't attempt it if you have breathing difficulties, heart trouble or fitness issues. AND you have to pay to get in ! Imagine if i tried to charge people to come down my road? Another example of the devon folk fleecing tourists.

We visited Clovelly on Easter Saturday, a long steep walk down, something we had done before when our 2 children were much younger, paying to get in wasn't an issue, a privately owned village has to pay for its up keep somehow, we even opted to pay for a ride in a land rover back up the hill, my disappointment lies with the awful amount of dog mess around what seemed every corner, even after avoiding it going down the hill we ventured on the rocky beach to see the waterfall and it was visible everywhere in the end we stopped the children picking rocks up we were concerned what they might pick up and viewed the waterfall from a distance! I don't have in issue with dogs being allowed to walk around and I know responsible owners would clear up after their dogs however we all know some owners don't care, so come on Clovelly to keep your village as beautiful as it looks in the pictures you need to use some of that entrance fee to clean up your streets.
