“great fresh food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2013

This hotel restaurant is in an amazing location overlooking a tiny, atmospheric harbour. We went there for dinner with 2 oldies and although parking was a struggle (you have to drive right down to the Inn which you are allowed to do if you are staying or eating there) it was worth it. The restaurant is quaint, nearly old-fashioned and serving staff varied from those that knew their stuff really well, and those that didn't know too much at all - albeit that they were charming and went to find out! The food was really great, as were the local ales and the local wines most excellent. Locally sourced, well made and presented with simplicity but imagination. The restaurant was a little quiet (quite couplely) so we were a slightly noisier family gathering of 7 (olds, middles and teens). Not cheap but by far the best meal that we had in the area.

A very pleasant little hotel with clean pleasant rooms, very friendly staff and good value meals including excellent breakfasts and breakfast service. All in all we had 2 very pleasant nights stay here when our planned diving of Lundy Island was blown out. We stayed in the annex rooms directly opposite the hotel which were budget rooms without en-suite but with very clean multiple shared bathrooms with powerful showers and large baths. Highly recommended accommodation for visitors to the very beautiful and picturesque fishing village and ideal for divers chartering one of the 2 dive charter boats available out of the harbour. Unfortunately due to the very steep hill location of the village and the position of this Hotel in the centre of the village it may not be suitable for the older or infirm traveller. The very narrow cobbled streets of the village are pedestrian only and the cars are parked at the top at the visitors centre and you are required to walk down to the hotel. This all adds to the ambience of the stay and guarantees peaceful rooms even at the front of the hotel.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms at the front of the main hotel have a front sit out verandah looking out over the...

Amazingly got a room for Bank Holiday at short notice. Old hotel so room was quaint but clean, bed soft, lovely towels. Plenty of tea and coffee in the room. Service was excellent and the staff care. Breakfast was all one could wish for. All in all well pleased!

We only stayed for one night. We received a warm welcome and were very pleased to be shown to a delightful room with a balcony. The room was very comfortable and of a good size. Restaurants are few and far between in Clovelly. The Restaurant was not open in the hotel on the night we stayed, (Monday) so we had little choice but to eat in the bar, not what we had in mind. However, the bar menu was varied and both the quality of the food and the prices were very good. Be aware that last orders for food is 8pm. ( The Red Lion is also quite early at 8.30pm ). Breakfast was served in a lovely dining room and was excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay at The New Inn and would have no doubts about booking another stay in the future.

Room Tip: Room No 5 is spacious and has a balcony that looks over the main street. There are also distant sea...

We stayed for one night whilst walking some of the South West Coast path. Since reception isn't manned all the time (we arrived early evening) we had to check-in at the bar. This was no problem though as it's clearly signposted and very close by. We were very glad we'd chosen the New Inn over the Red Lion as you barely have to enter Clovelly off the footpath and you're there.
We opted for a double room with shared bathroom (there's a sink in the room) but I'm pretty sure we had sole use of the bathroom! The shower was powerful and very modern and both the bathroom and room were very clean.
The room was basic as we expected and overlooking Clovelly's main, very pretty street which was lovely. The only downside was that the interior walls are quite thin and the windows are single-glazed (as you'd expect; it's an 18th century building) so it's quite noisy from other rooms and the bar across the road.
We ate in the inn's bar - the food is simple but tasty and there's plenty of it! Breakfast was great - the dining room is a lovely old fashioned room and there's a good selection of cereal, fruit, yoghurt, cooked options (including veggie), toast, croissants, fruit juice etc. The staff were very friendly and attentive.
The final good tip (for walkers who want to make an early start especially) is that they'll make you up a packed lunch (not cheap - £5.50 for sandwiches, crisps, fruit and kitkat) which is really useful when there are few shops in Clovelly and some of them don't open until 10am.

We stayed in the New Inn as we wanted to have funds to experience the North Devon coast, we were drawn to the other hotel in the village but the cost lead us to The New Inn.

Hayleigh on reception was very pleasant and helpful, other receptionist not so, but Hayleigh made up for this. The reception is not manned all hours which is difficult, and not what you expect from a hotel.

Breakfast was fine, the room although a little small was what we needed somewhere to sleep and venture out.

Ideal for walkers like us.

After an epic walk we were told about Em a Calming Quay Treatments, we were put in touch by a flyer, (MAY ADD WE WERE NOT TOLD ABOUT THIS SERVICE THIS SHOULD BE DONE UPON ARRIVAL as it was very beneficial).

Em responded by email within the hour as she was with another client when we contacted her, booked us both in for the next day, and i can honestly say, the epic walk was erased from my aching muscles, with hot stones the sound of the sea and a decent therapist who knows her stuff.

After leaving with lists of oils websites, and a contact for a therapist near us we floated up the cobbles and had a lovely fish selection for tea.

BTW Hotel guests receive a discount so it really is worth booking, and booking in advance before you come down!!!

I highly recommend the New Inn and Calming Quay Treatments, the hotel may need some work, the decor may be dated, but the reception that we received was excellent.

And we are booking again (and have already booked Calming Quay Treatments for a massage)

We stayed 2 nights in July. It is generally old fashioned and in need of some work. Our double room was tiny (I kept knocking the TV stand when walking between it and the bed) and the ensuite had black mould around the bath. When we got back on Saturday night the bed had not been made and a dirty cup had been left on the bedside table. Breakfast was good but beware if you need to be anywhere early as it does not start until 8:30am. We paid £116 per night for B&B which is expensive in comparison to similar accomodation I have stayed in.
