“Great setting but I agree it is weird”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2013

We stayed here for 1 night in June and picked it because it was conveniently located on our way to southern Cornwall. I had read the reviews and decided I would take the chance, after all, how strange could it be. Well, pretty strange is the answer. We booked 2 Classic Kings with 4 Poster Beds. The rooms are large and we did have terrific views of Tintagel Castle but that is where the "pluses" ended. The "king" bed must be related to King Arthur because it was a standard double bed although it was a 4 Poster. The bed linens are fine but don't make up for being crammed into a much smaller bed than expected. The bathrooms can only be described as bizarre as other people have mentioned. And do be careful. . . we kept slipping into the shower every time we were at the sink!
The full English breakfast was included in our room rate and when we arrived in the breakfast room the buffet had been ravaged by a departing tour group. When we asked, the buffet was eventually replenished but the food was still pretty poor quality and lukewarm.
The public areas are in need of refurbishing with worn carpets and upholstery which is a little hard to take when you can look into the "private" sitting room adjacent to the public lounge area and see a truly lavishly decorated and substantial living room.
The dogs at the front desk were fun and the staff is trying to make the best with what they have.
My recommendation is to organize your trip so you visit Tintangel Castle but stay elsewhere.

Overall, a place to come at least once. But paintings does not fit with the rest of the place, with some affronts to good taste. Otherwise fantastic sea view, lots of character, an amazing Victorian building, simple but very good food, really friendly staff, tranquility and a place to recharge the batteries.

Room Tip: Take room with sea view

Gorgeous setting, although what looks like a medieval castle is actually referred to as the asylum break, as this was what it reminded us of! Looks nice on the net but in reality small rooms with strange art or should I say sticker collages that are just a bit weird. Staff were friendly and breakfast was nice.

Will not be going back

I I took my wife to the Eden project for a birthday treat and wanted somewhere special to stay for 2 nights, my son went on the internet and found Camelot and it made her birthday very special.
For virtually the same price as staying at a premier inn, we were welcomed at reception by a very nice man, who after booking us in proceeded to give us a guided tour of the hotel and facilities and made it very clear that if there was anything they could do to make our stay enjoyable we need only ask any member of staff .The hotel itself was a delight as if going back in time and the staff matched this by being efficient and courteous at all times. The food for the price was first class and the hotel was spotlessly clean. All of this set amongst stunning scenery. We will certainly be going back,Thank you to the owners and staff for a wonderfull weekend

Room Tip: we had a moor room but still had fantastic sea views

The website promises something that just does't exist! Yes, it looks like a castle (just) and is perched on the cliff top and the views are spectacular but that is where the good things end!
The whole place is a shrine to how wonderful the owner is and his arty side kick. The reception is full of photos with Mappin (the owner) and any celeb he can get a photo with (most look fake) and the rest of the hotel is full up with his side kicks (Ted) art which is awful.
The room was ok but the bathroom was awful, like some sort of plastic cubical added to the room to make it ensuite which was so small you had to leave the door open to brush your teeth!
Wandering around Tintagel there are plenty of other places to stay, check these out first.

We stayed for one night at the Castle Hotel, we paid a sea view deluxe room, which was generally ok, bathroom was newly made and was fine, bedroom was dark and the sea view we just could sort out. The dinner was a nightmare, chicken breast was dry, the beans and carrot more raw and what was called sauce looked as a dark brown water with no taste. The Artist of the house, has a handshake like a weak 120 year old chap, his aritocratic manners are in fact pure arrogance nothing more. I strongly recommend to avoid this place it is not half of the money worth they charge.

We recently stayed at this hotel. thinking it would be a romantic, medieval hotel!
We were a little surprised when we arrived. At the reception, we were greeted by a Hollywood hall of fame. The owner, has an obvious taste of self-admiration. The entrance is littered with photos of himself with anyone who is even slightly famous. Not a pleasant entrance.

We were told by the receptionist, that this hotel doubles as an art gallery for the owner. EVERY wall of the hotel was covered with these juvenile paintings, even in the toilets!! Not in keeping with such a building.
The room was large, clean, but very dated. The shower, toilet and basin were a weird replica of a ' Portaloo' that you would find on a building site. Again, really not in keeping with the hotel.

We went to dinner, only to find 3 books on every table. One said, "Camelot Castle". we picked this up thinkng it would give the hisory of the place. But.... it was a photo album of the owner!
The next book, was a book entirely of his art work. Oh, and all the other books too.
( You must have a obscure sense of modern art to appreciate this).
The owner then came in to have a chat, ( nice touch, but we werent famous), with us. We got up from the table to shake his hand, ( as that is considered social etiquette), only to be told by him,"
"Oh... ha ha ha, dont get up for me, I'm not that famous yet!!!" ( And yes....he meant it!!)
Really, a serious case of Narcissism.

We went away for a short peaceful break, but the forced baptism of this guy and his self-worth, was over bearing. His egotism and vanity , were really off putting.

When we left, we were given a questionnaire. Well. it only had one question.
'Would you reccommend us".
The staff actually stood over us while we ticked a box, so we felt obliged to say yes, but we really meant NO!!!!!!

It really is a strange place. The owner uses this hotel as a platform to tell you how wonderful he is.
Not a pleasant experience.
