Camelot Castle Hotel
Ranked #3 of 6 Hotels in Tintagel
Reviewed November 11, 2012

We stayed for 3 nights on a special deal that was cheaper than most other places and it also included breakfast which is always a bonus. We were really unsure of what to think of this place... one of the owners is a wanna be famous artist (I'd never heard of him dispite just finishing a art degree). This "artist" has adapted the hotel into a kind of gallery for all his distastful obviously churned out artwork (it's on every wall). The worst has to be the horrible glittery paintings with stick on butterflies.. I've seen a 5 year old do better. Appart from this unfortunate decor the hotel is in a stunning location with breathtaking views. We got a free upgrade to a seaview due to the quiet winter season but I recommend paying a little extra to get the seaviews as it detracts a little from the artwork. We did read the reviews about the "tardis" bathrooms so were fully prepared and it wouldn't have bothered us but as it turns out the deluxe rooms have a normall bathroom with even a bath!
We felt uncomfortable for the majority of the stay as the owner and some of the staff seemed to look down on us when we arrived in our walking clothes in a old 2002 reg car. There were several very expensive cars parked right outside the front door (we assumed for show).
The bar was hidiously over priced and we had to ask at the reception twice to get served after sitting at the bar with an empty glass for 15mins. Breakfast was really good with a nice seletion (apart from the cheap thin bread for toast) Lots of cearels and juices.
I couldn't reccomend this hotel at the full price but with the winter deal we got and the free upgrade it was ok. I would not stay here again but I can't say that I didn't enjoy my stay as the area is lovely and we went for many lovely cliff top walks. Boscastle is our favorite place to visit. I just wish that they take down those horrible paintings that ruin the whole atmosphere.

Room Tip: Go "out of season" in the winter on one of the deals and hope that they give you a room up...

Ted Stourton is probably the greatest abstract realist artist of all time. This is our opinion of his art. Others have their own opinions which of course may differ.  We feel that it is wonderful that he is so giving of his time and his creativity to the world.  We are incredibly fortunate to have some of his collection and original paintings here in the hotel.  Beauty and art of course lie the eye of the beholder.  But it is important to be able to notice envy and intolerance in a review either of a hotel or in relation to or it owners or art.

A mind or heart filled envy and intolerance is most certainly an unattractive quality and has no place at Camelot Castle.

Perhaps this is why such reviewers feel uncomfortable here.

We welcome and service hundreds and hundreds of delighted guests at this hotel every month and many thousands of guests a year and this review is not in the slightest bit representative or indicative of the experience of the vast majority of our customers.

It is important that envy and intolerance is noted as such.

The Management.

Position, position, position. This accommodation was built in the late 19th Century and has a most spectacular position right on the coast looking directly at the ruins of Tintagel Castle and Merlin's Cave, which legends say is the birthplace of King Arthur. The public rooms have been well decorated and the mostly Polish staff were pleasant. Unfortunately the "feeling" of the hotel was very unusual. The currrent owners are VERY, VERY into self promotion and the staff seem slightly uneasy, perhaps even fearful. The artwork is very unusual as well and not suited to the venue. Our room was quite spacious but the bathroom was so tiny it was hard to dry yourself off in that space. It was more like showering in a caravan than a castle. I called it the "Beam me up Scotty" shower because it was like being in a narrow tube. There is an interesting tiny 19thC lift too which is a bit slow and scary. The position is fabulous with wonderful views but the feeling of the place was strange.

Room Tip: We had an end room with three windows facing the sea which was great but the tiny bathroom detracted...

We stayed one night in the hotel in October 2012 and one night was enough.

The view and location are stunning but, unfortunately the hotel is trying to be something that it's not. This building must have been beautiful 100 years ago, but these days it is not what one would expect of a large Victorian "luxury" hotel on the coast.

Example 1: Vintage plush couch...with fake tassels on the corners made of hard plastic.

Example 2: The room is big but then you have airplane-style plastic toilet unit in the corner of the room. We didn't even bother using the shower.

Example 3: The mattress was very thin.

Example 4: There are photos of celebrities everywhere (not necessarily AT the hotel) and a hotel newspaper featuring articles of the owners at various unknown events.

Basically the vibe of the hotel is odd. The "art" is everywhere and looks like a 5-year-old girl went to work with glittery paints and butterfly stickers. Finally, we decided to try the restaurant and were also disappointed. Untrained and clumsy staff with oversized captain-like uniforms served mediocre food, sometimes forgetting our order.

So, if you're looking for a comfortable/romantic/chic getaway to the charming Cornish coast...perhaps look elsewhere.

One night stay at the end of a short break in Cornwall. Had read many mixed reviews but thought the location was so amazing it was worth a try! Glad we did. Reception very helpful and friendly. Didn't have a room available with a complete sea view but we could see the sea and hills. Smallish double room in need of a make over but obviously the bathroom had already been done was lovely. We had dinner in the very splendid dining room which we enjoyed. Breakast was also fine. Would recommend to everyone - it's quirky, but fun.

Firstly, don't be deceived by the website for this hotel. All is not as it appears to be!
Without a doubt, the location is stunning, the entrance hall and dining room are also presented to a very high standard but, unfortunately, the bedrooms do not reflect the inflated prices being asked. If you want to stay in a box room with a toilet that doesn't flush, a television which stands lower than the bed, no information about amenities or indeed, the history of this place, no toiletry rack in the shower then go and stay here!
Having met the owner all becomes apparent! This place is one huge ego trip. I personally think attention to detail and to guests should take priority over GCSE art which adorns the walls , CDs in the room to promote scientology and self produced newspapers to massage the owners ego.
In summary, a real shame and a total rip off! This place has such potential. However, either run it as a residence for artists or if as a hotel, charge prices which truly reflect what is on offer! Very dissappointed!

Fantastic location, breathtaking views, very friendly staff, rooms are dated but very clean & comfortable. The Great Hall was stunning & very easy to relax in after a busy day, log fire, comfortable sofas. Staff were also very accommodating for our dog as we raw feed & they kept the food in a fridge for us. The breakfast was great & plentiful, staff were very attentive. We used this as a base to explore Tintagel & the surrounding area. For the price we paid over a three night stay we have no complaints. We would definitely stay there again & look forward to it.

A quirky combination of class and tacky with superb views and naff art. Built in about 1899 to service the proposed Tintagel branch line,as you approach the hotel you have the the imposing view of what looks like a cross between a Victorian folly complete with battlements and Euro Disney with the plastic shields and Camelot Castle in big silver letters.

Enter the gothic style entrance walking past the owners Aston Martin and Bentley parked in front, through the revolving doors the period reception contrasts nicely with the photographic backdrop to take your photo, another Disney touch.

The main lobby, restaurant and bar have lush furniture and outstanding views in the classic Victorian version of a medieval castle, all set off against enormous canvases of 3rd class imitation modern/impressionist art done by someone trained in painting by Dulux.

We were informed by the front of desk that the owners had personally upgraded us to a room overlooking the castle, which is strange that he picked us from any of the other guests as he would not know us from Adam.

The general feel of the upper floors, hallways and bedrooms was of a tired property,in need of a strong refurbishment program. In fact the 'we apologise whilst refurbishment works are carried out' looked so old, they were in need of refurbishment themselves. The quaint cage lift took us up to our floor and our room, tucked away in a dingy corner had a lush bed, some thirties looking furniture and an en suite that was a cross between an aircraft loo and something out Bill & Ted's big adventure.

The view was fabulous though, the staff generally friendly and efficient and the restaurant was of good standard (though not as upmarket as the owners believe).

We really enjoyed ourselves and would return as it is definitely an experience. I would not worry about the Scientology aspect, the owners appear to be more deluded with what they see as their own importance but what most level headed people would call a*al.

Go have fun and don't take it too seriously ,especially the Camelot News which is blatant, out of date laughable self promotion.

We loved it!
