We were sat at an outside table finishing our starters, when a man stepped out of the entrance on to a small balcony right beside where we were sitting and immediately lit up a cigarette. This was within two feet of the open French windows, being the direct entrance to the indoor dining area.
We politely asked him if he would stop smoking or move away as we did not want cigarette smoke over our food. He was immediately confrontational and flatly refused. Assuming he was a customer we said we would ask a member of staff to intervene. He was not concerned about this and informed us that he was the owner, in a manner which implied he would do what he wanted.
The member of staff we spoke to informed us that there was nothing she could do as he was her manager.
Although he did eventually move a little further along the balcony, his manner remained confrontational and we felt we had no alternative but to leave, even though we had not received our main course. We had paid for the whole meal at the point of ordering (£70+). We asked him if he would give us a refund, he was dismissive and refused.
We were astonished at his rudeness and arrogance, we find it difficult to believe he is employed in a customer service industry, let alone as a manager.
In addition the smoke from his cigarette was clearly drifting through the French windows, directly into the indoor dining area, since he was only two feet away from the doorway.
Our complaint about the restaurant is restricted totally to this person, the food and staff were acceptable, but the attitude of the manager ruined our experience. We would strongly advise against visiting an establishment whose manager clearly has no skills in customer service.
