Description: The Idle Rocks has the most enviable location in St Mawes, overlooking the harbour with views across the River Fal to Falmouth. After a long day lazing on the beach, our south facing terrace is the perfect place to relax, have a long drink, and watch the world go by. You may even see your dinner being landed on the harbourside. The Idle Rock’s restaurant, run by our head chef, Guy Owen, is a celebration of Cornwall; showcasing a range of fabulous produce that has been sourced locally using only seasonal fresh ingredients. In many cases it will have been swimming right on our doorstep only a few hours earlier and while the food is of the very highest standard our setting is very relaxed.

“Just a bit of training needed.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2014

Popped into the Idle Rocks for an early evening drink on a gloriously sunny day in July. The first slight embarrassment was that when we came in the front door and headed towards the bar area we were stopped by the receptionist who specifically broke of her phone conversation and looked horrified at the thought of us being able to have a drink on the terrace (we were dressed fairly smartly as it happens). I can see the terrace clearly from our accommodation in St Mawes so I knew there was plenty of room even for a non-resident, to enjoy a drink and once we got through to the bar we were told of course it was fine and were shown a great table on the terrace and given drinks menus. Then we waited. Waited some more and after 15 mins I went inside to see if someone could come and serve us. There were 4 waitresses with trays stood by the bar so I'm not sure why they were giving the terrace a wide berth. Then the chap who seemed to be running the small team came out and was very pleasant and recommended and excellent Cornish Pilsner for me and my wife had a delicious elderflower presse, also delicious. It was a very enjoyable half hour and then when our glasses were empty we may have had another but no sign of anyone to ask us! After 15 minutes we decided to get up and pay inside and there they all were again! The chap was very pleasant again as we paid at the till station and he has definite potential but the whole team just seem to need some STAFF TRAINING! Don't be put off giving it a go but be prepared to do a lot of your own leg work to get some attention.

“Snobby and pretentious”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2014

My husband and I had visited the Idle Rocks in the past and enjoyed a sandwich and drink on the terrace and thought it was a really beautiful setting. We called in this week and received a very frosty reception. There was a very 'important' man sat just inside the door who asked if he could help - what he really meant was what are you here for? We said we would like to have a drink on the terrace and we were basically told 'No' . He stated there were only 2 tables available for people not eating and there were already people waiting. We had intended on eating but were not even given the chance to do so. Ironically there were quite a few empty tables and these remained empty after we had enjoyed a very pleasant lunch at the pub across the road! Whilst there,we saw numerous people turned away, just like we'd been. The pub across the road must be rubbing their hands at the trade that is being passed their way
I realise that the hotel can choose who they let sit on their terrace but they need to remember that when their posh visitors tire of their snobby attitude, they may be glad of the every day, ordinary customer. Often you find that snobby and pretentious people and places are actually not that good anyway so they probably did us a favour by directing us across the road. What a shame the hotel has lost it's friendly and welcoming charm. It was much better when it boasted a full terrace of clients enjoying the sunshine in a beautiful setting rather than half it's tables being empty!

“Service lets this great restaurant down”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2014 via mobile

We had two dinners in the last few days, and the food is absolutely fab, for a very reasonable price given the quality. The location by the sea and the views make the restaurant even more special. Service unfortunately was not great: not very attentive nor friendly, with the exception of one waitress who was wonderful. A recommendation despite the service, as this would be a definite 5 star.

“Lovely terrace”

We had a pre dinner drink on the terrace in the late sunshine. Fabulous views over the estuary and very comfortable sofa - we didn't eat here but the drinks were nice, service not very attentive

“Over priced”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 29, 2014 via mobile

The setting for this restaurant is superb and the decor is very stylish. I feel this is an excuse to charge rather high prices for a pleasant but small meal. My husband had a piece of lamb so small that he thought they had forgotten to put a second piece on the plate. The dessert was very good but again very pricey. Service was patchy and a few times we thought they had forgotten about us. Over all a pleasant meal in a lovely setting but not a match for the prices charged.
