Description: The Idle Rocks has the most enviable location in St Mawes, overlooking the harbour with views across the River Fal to Falmouth. After a long day lazing on the beach, our south facing terrace is the perfect place to relax, have a long drink, and watch the world go by. You may even see your dinner being landed on the harbourside. The Idle Rock’s restaurant, run by our head chef, Guy Owen, is a celebration of Cornwall; showcasing a range of fabulous produce that has been sourced locally using only seasonal fresh ingredients. In many cases it will have been swimming right on our doorstep only a few hours earlier and while the food is of the very highest standard our setting is very relaxed.

“Great sunday lunch for a large group”
Reviewed October 22, 2013

I was down in Cornwall for a weekend to celebrate birthdays with friends and family. We booked a table for 20 people. We had a fantastic table in a great location and we were looked after extremely well by the staff. The food was excellent, location sublime, views exceptional, decor and general ambience was perfect. From my five year old nephew, to the older members of the party we had a fabulous afternoon.

Thank you Idle Rocks-we shall be returning!

“Yes and no”
Reviewed October 22, 2013

Well we certainly didn't get the more-interested-in-her-Mac treatment other reviewers suffered earlier this month. The staff couldn't have been friendlier. We asked to see a room. The decor was that modern seaside shades-of-driftwood colour with an attractive bathroom and a view over the harbour, so a good recommendation if you want to stay in the heart of the village.

Dinner showed traces of style over substance. The head waiter stands out as the one member of the team who knows what she's doing. Her description of the wine was detailed and spot on. The chef aspires to "fine dining" (quotation marks because the words always make my heart sink). He ought to aspire to fine food. He needs to work on flavour. The crabmeat first course was spot on: a tomato stuffed with fine crabmeat. Rabbit terrine had a crisp coat which added texture but overwhelmed any taste of rabbit in what was otherwise a well constructed terrine. Our fish was oversalted. "Half smoking" the lobster was clever, but didn't add much to a perfectly good lobster. The chocolate pudding was beautifully presented but lacked the intense taste of chocolate it needed. We couldn't tell what the marinated pineapple had been marinated in. It tasted simply of a small chunk of perfectly good pineapple with a sprinkling of chilli on one end.

What the Idle Rocks needs is a first class manager for a year. Staff are young and keen (or were the night we went - see below), but lack the assurance that comes with experience. There is a lot of running to and fro. Fine, but if you want to operate in this price bracket you need to project an air of calm competence. At the moment it is still all rather jerky. A bit of hands-on management would sort it out. Concentrating on what the food tastes like rather than precision presentation would improve it.

St Mawes is a village. Nothing goes unremarked. The following day we heard a gem. A guest asked Reception if they could have the Sunday Times they had ordered but which hadn't been delivered to their room. There is a news agent 100 yards down the road, so easy to fix. But it wasn't. The hapless guest was directed to the used copy in the sitting room.

“Great location & Great food”
Reviewed October 21, 2013 via mobile

I had high expectations before i had even arrived due to all the positive comments I have heard from so many people.

I was not disappointed, from the time I arrived until the time I left.
It was "all" totally faultless, including the weather!!

“Enjoyable Lunch”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

6 of us went for lunch to celebrate a birthday. The new decor is fabulous, and the design of the restaurant makes full use of the fanastic view. I agree with others reviewers that the menu is a bit limited, but enough for lunch, and what is on offer is very well cooked and presented. The staff were very attentive and helpful. A very enjoyable luncheon experience and one i hope to repeat soon!

“Posh but good”
Reviewed October 12, 2013

Visited a couple of times. Excellent location, pleasant ambiance and good service. Noticed a distinct thawing in their manner when we asked for the wine list. Food of limited choice but excellently cooked and presented. Delicious lamb came with a green sauce and a brown jus - one day both were too sweet and had to be avoided, but on the next occasion neither were at all sweet. (Interesting that a request for "tap water" resulted in something that looked like a cross between fruit cocktail and a green salad - had to send it back to get plain old water!) Pity the "catch of the day" was mackerel each time. Some things were in generous portions (eg whitebait) whilst others (lamb or mackerel) were less than generous. Will we go back? Probably...
