The Victory Inn as a pub is fine but as a place to stay it leaves a lot to be desired. The rooms on first impression are fine, apart from the carpet in the bathrooms, but the approach does not give a good impression as the carpets are filthy. This is the route the staff use to access their accommodation (live in chef(s), maybe other staff) and show what looks like dark track marks of grease. At the start of the stairs is a dumping ground visible as you go up and for £90 a night per room (should have been £110, but as we were staying for 5 nights we were offered a reduction), this is not acceptable.
There are only two rooms in the Victory and my friends had the one behind the staff door which is also situated over the front of the pub. Behind this door and next to their room was what looked like the dumping ground for the dirty washing for the pub/restaurant/rooms, which she said stunk, particularly over the weekend when it would seem no one dealt with it.
What one would expect and what I have received in other B&Bs is a room cleaned everyday but this was not the case. Bins weren't emptied, baths, sinks and surrounding areas not cleaned, hoovering was, as and when, if at all. Blinds that looked like they hadn't been cleaned in months and a light shade in the bathroom was the same way. Stains on the decorative bed cover. My friends room wasn't cleaned at all the first night until she complained. Sticky tables (although we think they had been wiped) in the breakfast room which serves as the restaurant during the evening, adds another layer nail into the cleaning coffin and the carpet in there, well what can I say!?
Both rooms could easily hear the antics of the pub and with a midnight closing time everynight but Sunday we didn't get to sleep till 0050 hours. There was no mention of this on the website. My room at the back was then subject in the morning to the radio of the chef preparing that days food right beneath our window.
The owner does not seem to live at the Victory and if there are set standards there appears to be no one responsible for ensuring that these standards are met. I do have to say though I think no standards have been set and it seems to be a free for all for the varying members of staff who work there. Generally, all were fine but they seemed as if they were seasonal staff and there was no direction in what they did day today.
The quality of the breakfast varied from day to day depending on the chef, but generally was Ok, although there seemed to be no continuity and one day (on Saturday) I got an omelette served as scrambled egg!
The Victory is in a great location and so much more could be done with it. Get a housekeeper in to set and supervise cleaning and Ruth Watson (as was, The Hotel Inspector) to up the decor and educate. Nothing can be done about the pub noise but the prices need to reflect this.
