Victory Inn
Ranked #6 of 6 St Mawes B&B and Inns

The Victory Inn as a pub is fine but as a place to stay it leaves a lot to be desired. The rooms on first impression are fine, apart from the carpet in the bathrooms, but the approach does not give a good impression as the carpets are filthy. This is the route the staff use to access their accommodation (live in chef(s), maybe other staff) and show what looks like dark track marks of grease. At the start of the stairs is a dumping ground visible as you go up and for £90 a night per room (should have been £110, but as we were staying for 5 nights we were offered a reduction), this is not acceptable.

There are only two rooms in the Victory and my friends had the one behind the staff door which is also situated over the front of the pub. Behind this door and next to their room was what looked like the dumping ground for the dirty washing for the pub/restaurant/rooms, which she said stunk, particularly over the weekend when it would seem no one dealt with it.

What one would expect and what I have received in other B&Bs is a room cleaned everyday but this was not the case. Bins weren't emptied, baths, sinks and surrounding areas not cleaned, hoovering was, as and when, if at all. Blinds that looked like they hadn't been cleaned in months and a light shade in the bathroom was the same way. Stains on the decorative bed cover. My friends room wasn't cleaned at all the first night until she complained. Sticky tables (although we think they had been wiped) in the breakfast room which serves as the restaurant during the evening, adds another layer nail into the cleaning coffin and the carpet in there, well what can I say!?

Both rooms could easily hear the antics of the pub and with a midnight closing time everynight but Sunday we didn't get to sleep till 0050 hours. There was no mention of this on the website. My room at the back was then subject in the morning to the radio of the chef preparing that days food right beneath our window.

The owner does not seem to live at the Victory and if there are set standards there appears to be no one responsible for ensuring that these standards are met. I do have to say though I think no standards have been set and it seems to be a free for all for the varying members of staff who work there. Generally, all were fine but they seemed as if they were seasonal staff and there was no direction in what they did day today.

The quality of the breakfast varied from day to day depending on the chef, but generally was Ok, although there seemed to be no continuity and one day (on Saturday) I got an omelette served as scrambled egg!

The Victory is in a great location and so much more could be done with it. Get a housekeeper in to set and supervise cleaning and Ruth Watson (as was, The Hotel Inspector) to up the decor and educate. Nothing can be done about the pub noise but the prices need to reflect this.

Spent a long weekend in The Victory Inn and although it is a lovely pub to drink and eat in I wouldn't recommend anyone staying there - not if you want to sleep.
The room I had was above the pub and we felt as tho people were drinking in the room. The ceiling must be very thin indeed.
There were stag do's and rugby teams singing outside our window til the early hours of the morning and the landlord did nothing about it. Needless to say didn't sleep a wink and will not go back.
However the restaurant was lovely and service great.

As we were attending a wedding in St Mawes, ourselves and our friends booked both of the rooms in the Victory Inn for 2 and 3 nights.

The best points about the Victory Inn are the staff. Very, very friendly, polite and helpful. The rooms are also nicely decorated and cleaned every day. Breakfast is served in the upstairs restaurant which also has a small outside terrace overlooking the harbour. If the weather is nice, the staff have no problem in moving breakfast outside if required. Breakfast itself was good and plentiful. We ate in the restaurant one night and the fish was fresh and cooked perfectly.

On the minus side, the room at the front can be very noisy at weekends, with noise from the bar below and from the benches outside. There was also a birthday party taking place in the restaurant one night, where a band were playing right next to our bedroom wall. I'm sure that this isn't a regular occurence but it would have been nice to have been forewarned. If you plan to go to bed earlier than closing time at weekends, we would recommend the 'back room' although this only has a bath with a shower attachment, whereas the front room has a shower.

The toilet in our room was broken when we arrived, unbeknown to the landlord/staff and we had to use the restaurant toilet for one night. However, every effort was made to fix it when we reported it broken and after the arrival of a new part, it was fixed the next day when we arrived back from the wedding.

Our friends had a ten month old baby and nothing was too much of a problem for the staff, organising special chairs etc.

All in all, we would not hesitate to return but we would make sure that there were no bands or birthday parties next time!

The Victory Inn is a welcoming pub mared by rude and offhand service in the upstairs alacarte restaurant. All the manager could say was that the staff had been out on a heavy session the night before and it showed! Food was passable but the room we stayed in along with the restaurant needed a good clean and hoover. Breakfast the following morning resembled a greasy spoon cafe including black fatty eggs. Would look elsewhere in St Mawes to stay and eat next time.
