We had dinner here for dinner a few years ago whilst staying nearby on holiday and it was OK, but nothing particularly memorable and we wouldn't have rushed to go back. However, we were in St Mawes last month and arrived at 10pm due to traffic delays and asked where we could eat. Pretty much everything was shut but we were told that TIR may accommodate us. We went in and the receptionist asked the kitchen as seeing as the restaurant was still really busy they said they'd be happy to if we could order relatively quickly. We just had a main course on that basis and it has certainly changed. I agree with one of the other reviewers here in that I think it's close to giving the Tresanton a run for it's money on the food. The fish was super fish and expertly prepared and cooked, side dishes faultless, service charming, friendly and helpful. The decor has had a much needed refurb and it's bright and pleasant to look at and much more in keeping with it's surroundings. Our only disappointment was that we didn't stay here this time, but we will if we head back down to St Mawes in the future.

We were a group of six and sat outside on the lovely terrace overlooking St Mawes harbour.
Staff were quite slow to seat us, but this wasn't really a problem. We all ordered sole goujons which says something about the menu. The other fish of the day was mackerel - a cheap cut of fish that even a fish and chip shop would not try to palm off on you.
The goujons were dry and overcooked and the hand cut chips were huge but also dry and tasteless.
Desserts - measly portions, just one ball of sorbet, for instance. Crime brûlée was OK but I found the sundae disappointing.
Overall, poor value for money, unless you consider the view compensates.

Stayed at the Idle Rocks a few days ago and this hotel is amazing, the rooms are very clean, fresh and great value for money. Myself and my partner had dinner in the restaurant and I couldn't fault the service nor the dishes, the strawberries and cream were amazing... The staff very friendly and welcoming. The hotel decor is very chic and nice, I basically felt at home and very relaxed especially with our pimms on the terrace in the Cornish sun. We have stayed at the Tresanton last year and this is not a patch on Idle Rocks.... ABSOLUTLEY FANTASTIC... Keep it up guys.

We visited the Idle Rocks in August 2013. It is a wonderful location, especially out on the terrace, and has been nicely refitted since we were last there. So far so good, but we were bitterly disappointed when our cream teas arrived - at a very pretty price. The scones were dry/stale, the miserly portions of jam and cream were in ridiculous little glass pots which after a few moments in the sun warmed up the cream and the tea was stewed (too many tea bags and too little water in the pots, and no additional water for topping up). Given the price they charge for a cream tea (£77 for 7 of us I think my host paid, but that did include a beer and a couple of soft drinks) I dread what they will charge for a dinner, but am certainly not inclined to try the chef out as on this showing he cannot even cook a plain scone properly

A recent visit to the restaurant was a great success. Informal yet very stylishly decorated. The food was great, and a snack soon became a meal. The decor around the hotel really is worth more than a glance and gives a wonderfully relaxed seaside feel. The restaurant staff were helpful and enthusiastic, and the service generally could not be faulted.
