“St Mawes is a jewel and Tresanton is wonderful”
Reviewed December 22, 2013

Tresanton has been that uniquely wonderful combination of comfort and taste, with exceptional hospitality for its guests for years. We stayed at the hotel for a month at a time in summer in the early 1970's, as my maternal grandparents lived in St Mawes, so we know it well. It has improved since then, but some things cannot be improved on, as they are great: the location, and the wonderful taste and art work in the Hotel. St. Mawes is a yachtsman's mecca and if you like sailing, then there are more beautiful classic boats here than almost anywhere.

Frankly Tresanaton is an institution and while never cheap, it is always worth a stay, to experience the wonderful atmosphere of quiet understated taste in a glorious setting over looking St Mawes harbour and St. Anthony's Lighthouse. It is sheer magic, one of the most beautiful places in the world. So wonderfully English, its mood set by the weather. The Gulf Stream hits the Cornish coast here and you have an endlessly changing weather. Which you can experience on the balcony.

I love this place. Wonderful.

This was always our first choice for that 'special' meal to celebrate a birthday or anniversary. Sadly it is now off our list as the food/menu is not what it used to be. Since they abandoned the format of 2 or 3 courses at a special price we have noticed a falling-off in the quality of the food. Don't get me wrong.... it's still very good, but just not as good as it used to be. They now offer a 'special' menu of their choice. 2 courses and a glass of wine - no choice at all either in the food or the wine. And I really do not want to travel to the Roseland, navigate through the village or struggle with the steps to the Hotel or walk round the headland to get there to be faced with a special menu of fish and chips! Nice though that probably was! And opting for the 'regular' menu brings you food that is not of the variety or imaginative cuisine that used to be on available here.

The staff are still just as great and attentive as they always have been, and I would not fault them, but please, will someone have a word with the kitchen!

Lovely stylish large elegant rooms with beautiful views of the harbour and lighthouse. Many pleasant walks along the front.
Food varied and simply top notch.
The chef laid on a buffet lunch every day with tasty local specialities. Fish dishes, local pies and ice creams. Dinner was varied; fish dishes were exceptionally tasty. Most indulgent!
A wonderful place for a luxury romantic away stay.. We were here playing bridge all week and found the hospitality absolutely brilliant.
The local shops are also worth a visit.
We'll definitely be coming back next year for another 1 week stay .. Really can't wait!!!

It was the second time that we came here; the first time in Sept 2012 and now again in Winter 2013. We booked the large suite with the terrace facing the sea. Located at the promenade, nearby the old castle it is conveniently located in the quiet St Mawes, which on November is largely tourist free (but still busy with locals, thankfully). The interior is stylish, yet discreet and there is a large fireplace where we spent hours with one or two drinks. Our room was large and there is a large, elegant bathroom. There is WiFi in the rooms, which is a bit slow but sufficient to browse websites to plan the day. The breakfast buffet is excellent and there is a very good choice of cooked breakfast. We particularly enjoyed the Welsh rarebits on mushrooms!. We also had one dinner which was very good, but a bit expensive considering the one star restaurant only a few miles away.
Staff is very polite, helpful and courteous. They offered to par the car in the (slightly distant) car park on the hill above the property, and unusually also offered to pick it up when we checked out.
In summary this is an excellent hotel, also enjoyable off season!

Room Tip: We had the suite (with terrace) towards the sea. We think it is probably the best

Coffee on the terrace in the sunshine at the Tresanton - one of life's affordable pleasures.
Fresh croissants, excellent espresso and cappuccino, prompt and friendly service and a view across the water.
We frequently have lunch or dinner here and are never disappointed. Highly recommended.

My wife and I went back to St Mawes to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary and walked up the hill, attracted by the flags flying outside this hotel, looking for a place for lunch. We were initially impressed by the smart, white, jacketed staff. Shown by a friendly waitress to our table we were treated to a delicious meal - my mackerel starter was simply superb. Talking to our waitress we discovered that she came from Bulgaria (a place that we have never visited) and she was kind enough to print off some tourist information for us. How about that for the personal touch?

We booked the best suite in the hotel for a child free weekend away. The suite was fantastic as were all the staff from start to finish. The only criticism that we can think of is that the towels were small and not particularly fluffy but apart from that our weekend was fantastic.

We have already booked again for the summer as we cannot wait to sunbathe on the private terrace overlooking the sea!
