Owner description: This round stone artillery fortress was built for Henry the Eighth in 1542, using a cloverleaf plan with a four-storied round tower. Take the free audio tour to discover life at the castle during the Civil War and explore the castle and grounds with its stunning views out to sea. Child friendly and dog friendly.

“A "proper" castle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

Excellent English Heritage 500 year old castle with great views out over the estuary to its sister castle on the opposite headland. A proper military castle full of artillery pieces and a great staff to help.

“Coastal history”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 12, 2012

St Mawes Castle is more of an elaborate watch tower than a castle. It is part of a matching pair across the Fal estuary in Falmouth - the 3rd largest natural harbour in the world.

Historically very interesting with a very good audio included in the price. Certainly worth a visit. Kids will enjoy it too.

“what a view”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2012

whilst on a short break to Falmouth we took a ferry trip over to St Mawes, what a lovely little place, walked to the castle, well worth a visit, the views were amazing and the castle is very interesting, spent at least an hour there before taking the ferry back.

“Great Historical Castle lots to see and explore”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2012

I thought i would see it all in half an hour, but 4 floors later and a walk around the cannons and view points i realised that there is so much more to see than the part visible. You get a real sense of castle life back in the old days. Great place for your picnic. Toilets easily accessable. Free entry with a Mussel card which is a bonus.
