We telephoned at midday to ask if they had a table that lunchtime! They did! Everyone was so helpful and professional. We loved the beautiful terrace and, of course, the views over the harbour. Great food, great ambiance and our thanks for fitting us in! It made our holiday.

We do a great amount of treavelling, usually abroad because sometimes it can actually cost more to stay in the UK than it does to venture further afield.
We decided to stay in Cornwall, Penzance for my partner’s birthday (Sunday 13th June) and had spent numerous evenings on the internet prior to our trip to Cornwall trying to find a great location for us to spend his birthday meal. We stumbled upon this hotel/restaurant and decided that this was just what we had been looking for. We drove for nearly 2 hours from Penzance to St Mawes so we had high hopes for this restaurant/hotel.
Initially we were quite disappointed that there was no parking available... I am disabled so walking is often a struggle... it was an extremely long walk from where we eventually found a parking space up a steep hill to the front entrance of the hotel. We entered the restaurant up another 30 steps or so and we were generally impressed, so far it looked quaint and just as the pictures had shown.
We were greeted by the manager, who was not overly friendly and became even less so when he discovered we had not made a reservation. It was 6:45pm, the restaurant was completely empty and he advised us that we should come back at 9:30pm. The manager did not even offer us a seat in the bar area or suggest that we wait for a little while just in case there was a cancellation.
We went down to the bar downstairs simply to gather out thoughts, on a hunch, I asked the bar man downstairs if he could find out if there was availability for dinner in the restaurant, he made a phone call to the manager upstairs in the restaurant, the same man we had just spoken to, (who clearly did not know the table reservation was for us) and suddenly a table was available.
The manager came downstairs, saw it was us, then pulled the barman aside (I assumed to confirm that the reservation request was for us) then a short while after he came over to see us and said that he would prepare a table for us but we would need to leave by 8:30pm. Why hadn’t this solution been offered to us in the first place, 1.5 hours is more than adequate time for us to enjoy a meal!
The manager scurried off to fix up one of the many empty tables upstairs and my partner decided that this was not really where he wanted to spend his birthday meal, where he been made to feel so unwelcome.
We explained to the bar man why we were leaving and he offered suggestion for numerous other restaurants that we could eat that would be ‘ friendly’, absolutely unbelievable, this restaurant should have been friendly!
We didn’t want to think that the only reason the manager had not been accommodating to us was due to the fact that my partner was black, but we spent the rest of my partner’s birthday racking our brains as to why else the manager had been so against us. We are both well educated, well dressed and our attire certainly surpassed the other clientele in the bar, who were wearing shorts and flip-flops!
What a great shame this wicked, wicked man spoilt my partners birthday and has left us with an extremely poor opinion on what could have been a very nice place.
Needless to say we will not be returning to this hotel/restaurant until it is managed by more open minded people!

I accept that we must have appeared very clumsy and disorganised and apologise for the confusion. However, there were reasons why the maitre d' initially declined the early table. The fact that the restaurant is empty at 6.45 does not mean it will stay that way. A different member of staff unfortunately agreed to the table without consulting the maitre d' in charge, which was our mistake and should not have happened.

I absolutely reject any accusation of racial or disabled discrimination and I find it very unfair of these guests to voice their disappointment advocating discrimination. This is a totally unfounded accusation.

We are a busy restaurant and have a small floor space when we are unable to use the outdoor terrace. I suggest to all non residents to make a reservation before coming. This gives us also the opportunity to explain about parking.
