“Let down on our return visit”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2012

Having enjoyed a meal here last year we rebooked for 6 people on our return visit. From the outset the restaurant seemed too busy for the number of staff and the waitresses were working at such a pace literally moving tables around us that it was hard to relax. I must stress that the waitresses were very nice and kept apologising for the delays in service.
5 of us had duck pancakes which were very nice but predictable. The mussel and tiger prawn main was lovely. 4 of us ordered a fillet steak, two arrived cooked perfectly, lovely and tender. The other two looked completely different, half the thickness and visibly overcooked and dry. My parents refused to let me send their steaks back but their disappointment was obvious. I took the opportunity to quietly mention the overdone steaks to our waitress who immediately offered to speak to the chef. I was amazed to get a very sincere apology " because he knew it wasn't right; but because we'd been waiting a long time he took the chance to send it but did half expect it to come back"!!!!! She volunteered to remove the price of one steak off our bill.
Having been in St Ives for a week and eaten at Porthmeor, Porthminster, Blas and Alfresco, The Mermaid failed dismally to compete despite being comparable in price.

“Grumpy Staff”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 8, 2012

We booked this restaurant the week before we arrived in St Ives in August to make sure we got a table following all the great reviews, we were a family of 2 adults & 2 children. Unfortunately the hype certainly didn't live up to the reality. The lady who took us to our table was welcoming & friendly but our waitress didn't crack a smile all night & seemed put out that we asked for anything, even extra drinks. When our children's drinks didn't arrive with their main course,we politely queried where they were & they were eventually slammmed down on our table with no apology and after they had finished eating. Food was OK but to be honest we ate in much better restaurants in St Ives where the staff couldn't do enough & the food was amazing. Would recommend Ocean Grill, Seafood Cafe, Peppers & Porthgwidden Cafe - all excellent !

“Gorgeous little restaurant!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2012 via mobile

We recently visited The Mermaid whilst on holiday. Initially we called in and the restaurant was fully booked so it's advisable to book a table in advance.

We were a party of 7 with 4 children. The children's meals were fantastic value and were thoroughly enjoyed!

The early bird menu gives a great range of choice for a very reasonable price. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and we will definitely return next year!!

Only had a main course & a couple of beers but found the food excellent. Seafood medley of tiger prawns, scallops & cod in rich lobster sauce topped with sliced potatoes, accompanied by beer battered cauliflower which had to have second helpings of & garlic bread
Staff were extremley friendly in a nice cosy rustic atmosphere. Would definately return

“Lovely little restaurant tucked away”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2012

We went to the Mermaid for our first meal of the holiday. The Mermaid is a cosy restaurant and we had a lovely meal - good steak & fish and selection for the children. Service was very good. Whilst, we did enjoy our meal we felt that the meals were quite expensive. We did enjoy the food though!
