Having enjoyed a meal here last year we rebooked for 6 people on our return visit. From the outset the restaurant seemed too busy for the number of staff and the waitresses were working at such a pace literally moving tables around us that it was hard to relax. I must stress that the waitresses were very nice and kept apologising for the delays in service.
5 of us had duck pancakes which were very nice but predictable. The mussel and tiger prawn main was lovely. 4 of us ordered a fillet steak, two arrived cooked perfectly, lovely and tender. The other two looked completely different, half the thickness and visibly overcooked and dry. My parents refused to let me send their steaks back but their disappointment was obvious. I took the opportunity to quietly mention the overdone steaks to our waitress who immediately offered to speak to the chef. I was amazed to get a very sincere apology " because he knew it wasn't right; but because we'd been waiting a long time he took the chance to send it but did half expect it to come back"!!!!! She volunteered to remove the price of one steak off our bill.
Having been in St Ives for a week and eaten at Porthmeor, Porthminster, Blas and Alfresco, The Mermaid failed dismally to compete despite being comparable in price.
