On entering we loved the ambiance, decor, etc. The service was excellent as was the wine.
We ordered Steak and waited and waited. When the steak arrived they had managed to make rare steak, dry ? My wife figured it must have been stood for some time on a hot plate before being delivered to our table. For the money we were not impressed and will not go back.

Good choice of food over a wide range of dishes. If you want a night out on an average budget go here. Attentative, well-mannered staff, prompt service, well-presented and delicious food. Don't forget to book because this place is popular!

This restaurant had been recommended to us by friends and we were not disappointed. It is very unique in it's decor with lanterns and old photos on the walls and booth style seating areas. The staff were lovely. We had starters and mains. My steak was very nice with a lovely sauce and brilliant chunky chips. The mussel and tiger prawn main was very tasty but rather meagre as a main course. They happily served my 12 year old a child's steak. Overall great dining experience and very different to the other St Ives restaurants which are more contemporary in appearance. Well worth a visit.

The interior design is good even if it is a little cramped. A classic case of lets see how many tables we can fit in. The food was average and actually a little disappointing given the price. Despite having three courses, which is a rare thing for us to do, we still left feeling hungry. Service could have been so much better with empty plates and glasses been ignored on at least five occasions. If you are walking past a table ( which you always are ) why not collect the empties ?
Given the price of the main dishes, I was expecting a wonderful dining experience in a pleasant atmosphere. Instead I left feeling unimpressed, hungry and to some degree ripped off. At least Dick Turpin wore a mask !

I have been eating at The Mermaid for years.
I usually despise restaurants that dont change there menus, year in year out, but this amazing family run quaint little place gets away with it.
They know what they do and they do it right and its fish! You wont find a grain of grit in your mussels or a bit of chewy-ness from your scallop.
The owner has always been there, every time I have eaten there, the staff dont seem to change or move on.. ever. They are always professional, polite and good at what they do.
The whole style is old school charm, its not modern, its not 'with it', you get a silver vegetable side dish for good-ness sake ( I havent had one anywhere else since the 80's) but the veggies are excellent and the beer batter cauliflower is just amazing.
The Mermaid gets away with it, people go back, back and back again. Its always full of locals eating there and the place is blooming good!
The prices dont seem to change with the times either.
If you are in St.Ives, go there, give it a go, it may not have a view, but it does its food well.
