We have been eating out in st Ives for years and there are some lovely places to dine. When we want to celebrate however we head direct to the Garrack. The service, the atmosphere of the fine country house and the ever changing menu, make it a special evening every time. Eat off the set menu and it is real value for top local food cooked to the highest standard and presented properly. The wine list is amazing being on a corkage basis. Some top wines including the complete Camel Valley range.

The Garrack Restaurant is a hidden gem, with stunning views over St Ives Bay.

We ate there a number of times over the past two weeks and thought the food was excellent value for money. The chef excels at fish, whereas the venison and duck were over-done for our taste. However, the changing daily menu had some really interesting and delicious food, and we were happy to eat there again and again. Some of the dishes on the menu were a little "heavy" for me, with cream and blue cheese featuring regularly, but the chef adapted the dish well to make it lighter when I asked.

I was surprised to see one really poor review from this week, citing "rude and inexperienced staff". This was not our experience and we found all of the waiting staff to be friendly, eager to please and welcoming.

The ambiance is more "hotel restaurant" than "independent restaurant", but the food can compete with anything else in St Ives.

On first arrival our party of nine were ushered into a small room with barely enough seats for our party let alone the other diners already present. We were given a poor menu with very little choice and because of the lack of seats were left with four of us standing to view the menu and finally to order before being led to our table. The children's meals came out with the starters as requested but were of very poor quality. Two of the children had pizza which was one of the only three options available and to be honest a frozen pizza from the local supermarket would have been of better quality. When the pan fried steaks came out, although cooked to our liking, they were cold and very poorly presented. The waitress had dangly bracelets on and when collecting empty plates she was leaning over another diner and trailing her jewellery in another diners food who had not yet finished. She then proceeded to assume what one of our party could afford when ordering from the wine list. To top off the night we were directed to reception to pay for the meal instead of receiving the cheque at the table, whereupon we were left waiting while it was printed off at the computer. Along with the prices not matching up to the menu and were more expensively priced. Overall a poor experience from a mediocre venue trying to be something it clearly is not.

This suited us well being a more reserved venue than many in St Ives and serving very nice food in a classic style. The dining room was very pleasant, though if you want the magnificent view over St Ives you need to ask as most tables are away from the window

I read many glowing TripAdvisor reviews; but, in our opinion, neither the food nor the service supports the reputation of this hotel restaurant. It's become a bit shabby; and the service is even shabbier. The food is of reasonable quality, but needs more imagination and much better presentation. We give it an "OK," but we had envisioned a "Wow."
