Came down from Devon to the opening of the spring show last night. The gallery looks superb! The walls all pristine white, fantastic works of art, mostly in an abstract style in keeping with the gallery's long tradition. The staff were all friendly and kind. Well organised, well lit. Looks small from the outside but once you're in it's huge, a real tardis.
A delight of a gallery and an absolute must if you are an art fan! Only a stones throw from the Tate gallery and glorious Porthmeor beach. All that and it's free entry!
Can't wait to visit again

St Ives is awash with galleries, including the Tate St Ives, many aiming for holiday visitors and a smaller number aiming for the more serious collector. I have been visiting for many years but avoided this gallery as it charged an (admittedly small) entrance fee - other galleries have free entrance although the Tate charges non-members. Now this gallery, home of the Penwith Society of Arts, has dropped the entrance fee, and on visiting I was surprised to find that it is probably the best gallery in town, with beautiful space and lighting. It is also much larger than it appears from the entrance.
There is a great collection of mainly modern Cornish works. Particularly impressive were a large number of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham prints, original paintings by Margrit Clegg and Daphne Turner, sculptures in resin by Stephen Clutterbuck. Prices appeared very reasonable. The gallery is going to be getting some redecoration soon but I hope it is not changed too much as it looks great as it is. Well worth a visit.
