Arriving in St Ives earlier than planned my wife and I were looking for somewhere last minute to celebrate my birthday. We climbed the steps to Alex and Stefi in the Olives cafe premises more in hope than expectation but they had several tables free. We decided to take their suggestion of the 4 course menu as we were hungry and the dessert was free with this option. Very glad we did - a super first course of mussels got things off to a lovely start. My wife is unable to eat cheese so was concerned about the use of pecorino in the pasta course, but Alex and Stefi were happy to substitute plain pasta instead. This course with king prawns and cherry tomatoes was pleasant if a little bland. However the main dishes of hake and the vegetarian option of peperonata were both very good indeed, and we still had room for the desserts (a light and tasty chocolate cake and a creme brulee which Alex browned with a blowtorch at the table).
Inclusive of a bottle of decent wine our bill came to less than £80 which we felt was good value given the quality of the dishes and the care in their preparation. We were also made to feel very much at home - Alex is an excellent and personable host and the two of them are very knowledgeable about Italian cuisine. They don't offer an extensive menu but do cook what is fresh and in season, and do it very well. All in all we enjoyed the meal very much and it got our holiday off to an excellent start.
