“All Fur coat and no knickers!”
Reviewed June 19, 2013

The Harbour Spa is a nice hotel BUT not as nice as it thinks it is. It advertises itself as a boutique hotel however it does not provide the luxury and attention to detail a genuine boutique hotel would. It needs to either up it's game or lower it's expectations and prices and admit it is just a nice but not outstanding small chain hotel.

Bad points
-Bulbs blown and not replaced before guests arrive
- Service in the restaurant was slow and unfriendly (25 mins between main course and dessert and it was not one of the items advertised as taking a while to prepare)
-TV in room not working
- Lint had built up on the hairdryer filter to such an extent it was a health hazard (not to mention unsightly!
-Fire escape notice tucked in wardrobe
-Many of the rooms are without phones but guests
are not told this and expected to use their phones for
booking appointments.
-Reception left at just before 7pm on week nights (stayed longer at weekends)
- Shower and bath mechanisms unusual but no explanation on how they worked.

We made reception aware of the problems in the room the next day but only the fire notice (due to legal reasons?) was fixed.

Good Points
Most of staff (apart from restaurant) friendly - if not always on the ball.
Good location with stunning views.
Nice beds with lovely Egyptian cotton sheets.
Valet parking.

Would I stay again? Yes, but only if I could get a good deal. It is NOT worth the full price and is not the boutique hotel it purports to be. And I would eat out. The food in the restaurant sounds more gourmet than it tastes and the service is ridiculously slow. St Ives has a plethora of good restaurants to suit all budgets.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review on Trip Advisor. I am disappointed to hear the hotel did not meet your expectations. We are currently under going a refurbishment and I have not long myself taken over the hotel. It is my objective here to ensure all standards are raised. I will be assessing all of the points raised in your review.
I hope you will come again in the future to see the improvements that have been made.

This hotel has a superb location above the beautiful St Ives Bay in Cornwall. We were there for a Wedding Reception. The terrace and restaurant facilities for this were superb, although the weather was a little too cool and wet to enjoy the fabulous terrace. The buffet food was of satisfactory quality, but nothing special; however, the Cornish pasties were superb! The bar prices were reasonable for a hotel of this quality, Staff were very competent and friendly, to whom nothing was too much trouble. So, a really great venue for a function of this nature.

Our room was a sea view room with a delightful prospect over the bay. Sadly, no balcony to enjoy it to the full. The en suite facilities were in new condition and excellent. One slightly odd thing was that the fixed (immovable) shower head was exactly 6 feet from the tray (bath). I am 5' 11" so just fitted under it. For 6 footers+, you would have to keep your head down under the shower.

Comprehensive choices were available at Breakfast, which was of pretty good quality, but could have been better. For some strange reason, toast was ordered with tea/coffee before the main breakfast order. This arrived promptly, which meant that it was cold by the time breakfast arrived ( I like toast with my eggs, not before!). My choice of bacon, eggs (sunny side up), tomato and beans was good. However, the egg yolks were pretty solid (not at all consistent with the specification) and the tomatoes were hardly cooked at all (very healthy, but not as expected).

Parking was very jolly! The hotel has a vertical car park across the road from the main entrance. Make SURE a porter parks your car and retrieves it for you when you leave. It requires the most precise parking skills to get your car into or out of the tiny parking slots and negotiate the car lift. My car is a medium size Citroen. How on earth they manage with a Jag, or worse a Rolls, is a mystery!

However, because of it's location, facilities and Staff, a highly recommended Hotel.

Room Tip: Don't pay the extra for a sea view room since there are no balconies. All the public rooms/terra...

The best apartment I've ever stayed in. Top quality fixtures and fittings. Excellent location with sea views out of window to the front and balcony on the side looks over both Porthminster beach and down into St Ives town. Parking right next to the front door. Ten min walk to town. Split level apartment with kitchen and lounge diner and two balconies on upper level. Super king bed in master and twin bed with own ensuite.plenty of room for it to feel spacious. Top class and 5 star without a doubt.

I stayed here with my parents and our two young children, for two nights.

Whilst there were a few teeny problems, which were remedied promptly, we still have a brilliant stay.

Unfortunately, our son was sick and you can imagine the mess caused. The staff were fantastic and very attentive. I had to call reception at 2am to ask for a sick bowl and the chap brought up all sorts of bits and bobs to try and make things a little more comfortable for our son.

Despite the mess caused (he's only 3!), the house-keeping staff were lovely. We were also allowed to stay in our room 'til midday the following day, as our tot was still poorly. Very generous and such touches make so much difference when travelling with young children.

My only slight irk, is that some of the reception staff are a little cool. A few lessons is smiling wouldn't go amiss.

However, I'm very grateful for the staff who really went out of their way to help. I don't remember names, but there is a very pretty house-keeper with long blonde hair. She was fantastic and an asset to the hotel. If I were the manager, I'd move her to front of house and replace some of the grumpy ones.

Will definitely be back.

Thank you for your taking the time to post your review. I delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us despite your sons illness. I hope he is now full of beans and has recovered. I have passed on your comments to Analiese who was the house keeper you were taking about who was was delighted with your personal reference to herself. Hope to see you back again so for a less eventful and pleasurable stay.

Enjoyed a one night stay. The location is superb, just up the hill from the train station overlooking Porthminster beach. The outside terraces which accompany the bar and spa provide a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the wonderful view. The reception staff were slightly aloof and not particularly helpful, however, this was our only quibble and was only highlighted due to how helpful and efficient the staff were in all other areas of the hotel and spa.
