St. Ives Harbour Hotel & Spa
Ranked #11 of 20 Hotels in St Ives
Reviewed May 14, 2011

This hotel restores your faith in English hotels. Overlooking Porthminster beach, the hotel is in an absolutely stunning location and only a short walk to the harbour. It's a bit of a walk back up the hill but well worth it.
One of the biggest suprises for me was the amazing attitude of the staff. What a credit to their manager! Very friendly, always smiling, nothing is too much trouble. I shouldn't single individuals out but Wendy on reception was first class and Rebecca was a real ray of sunshine to greet us at breakfast. Other hotels could learn a great deal from the way The Porthminster is run.
We spent a lot of our time in St Ives planning how and when we can come back. I really hope that it is very soon. It is a beautiful hotel.
Thank you so much.

Thank you so much for your review, such positive comments are a real boost to everyone. I’m so glad to hear how much you enjoyed staying with us, even with the walk back up the hill!
I do hope that you will come and stay with us again soon, with the Harbour Spa opening next month, I’m sure you will not be disappointed!

I was prompted to write a review following some previous negative reviews. We had a wonderful weekend, the room was to very high standard- the bathroom the best we ghave experienced. The breakfast and dinner superb. The hotel bar, dining room and reception lovely. The staff professional and pleasant. Yes the car park is under refurb' and as a result there is a need for a valet run but this is reflected in the discounted price- your car is parked very safely offsite and there is minimam inconvenience as the hotel park the car for you.
Well done to all at the Porthminster- we will be back and have heartily recommended it to all our friends. A superb break - thank you.

We had spent what was quite a lot for us on a couple of nights here and were disappointed straightaway by the filthy toilet - obviously hadn't been cleaned and had a few days worth of urine encrusted around the base.

Also disappointed by the threadbare carpets and missing patches of wallpaper as you reach the top floor.

The staff were very helpful though - in particular the poor porter who had to come up and clean what the maids had missed in the bathroom !

The public areas are very nice, but the remainder needs a facelift.

Room Tip: Furnishings are better standard on lower floors

Dear kirrincottage

I was very shocked to read your review, which is most untypical and therefore of immense disappointment to us all at the hotel.

Cleanliness is an absolute pre-requisite and something I am normally 100% confident and proud of at the hotel.

I am also alarmed that this was not bought to my attention at the time, as clearly I could have taken the specific room attendant to task.

Your comments regarding the furnishings are valid to a couple of remaining non-refurbished rooms only, we will have these addressed prior to the peak season, not that this helps you now of course.

As it stands, while I am pleased you rated our team 5 out of 5, and enjoyed the refurbished areas, I am very disappointed with your review and would like to discuss it in more detail, if I may.

Please do contact me at the hotel so I can investigate further, perhaps reinstall your faith in us and seek to redress the balance in your favour.

With kind regards

Ben Young
General Manager

2 nights here (19th April) was pleasant and enjoyable, but not perfect. There have been many good things written on Tripadvisor about this hotel, here's a couple of downers.

-Parking is remote and poor, being in a lower car park quite a distance below the hotel.
-Room (we had 211) was neat & tidy, but the bath taps were awful - they weren't labelled hot/cold and because they were integrated with the shower, you had to stand up in the bath to turn them on or off !! (and get soaked with cold if you got it wrong)
-Also, the plug socket for the hair dryer is very inaccessible.
-The bathroom itself was very compact - I only weigh 10 stone, anyone much larger would struggle.
-The adjacent building site was quiet when we were there at a weekend, but I bet it's really noisy during weekdays.

but, the hotel is in a great spot, and the restaurant food was good, as was breakfast. Staff were pleasant & helpful and we probably would go back. It was only a 10 minute walk into St Ives (15 minutes uphill back though !)

I was very pleasantly surprised by this hotel! For only £95 per night we enjoyed beautiful sea views, a great location and a hearty breakfast. The hotel staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The beach is only a short stroll trhough the hotel grounds but it is quite steep, only an issue if you have an mobility problems.

The room was comfortable and clean but not flashy. I think some of the other rooms have been recently refurbished, but they do not have a sea view which is priceless. Some of the other guests were complaining about the off site parking which was provided while the car park is being rebuilt. Admittedly the secure car parking is miles away but with a helpful valet ready to take you there at any time of the day or night I don't think it is a problem at all unless you needed very regular access to your car. The building works to the side of the hotel were unobtrusive.

Overall a great stay and I would highly recommend the hotel

Room Tip: ask for sea view

.This hotel has recently been taken over and refurbished was excellent prior to this but the
standard of the rooms is outstanding, housekeeping and restaurant is fabulous. Location is outstanding overlooking Porthminster beach. Chef is very talented and the menu is varied and exciting without being ridiculously trendy so your children don't want to eat anything. We had a standard room but it had a seaview and the bathroom was exquisite.

Room Tip: enquire if a seaview room is available.
