Tregenna Castle Resort
Ranked #9 of 20 Hotels in St Ives
Reviewed October 11, 2013

I stayed here for two nights. The staff were wonderfully helpful and the food amazing. The service was a little slow. One night a large group were in the second there was a wedding so a little understandable. The room I had (room 2) was clean and very spacious. The view was pants but not everyone can have a sea view!! Because the whole hotel is made of granite phone reception is a little sketchy. There is only wifi in the reception area. But the view from the hotel is worth all the slight downsides. It's a great walk down into the town but I would say a taxi back up the hill maybe a consideration. (Cost me about £5).

All in all I would highly recommend this hotel.

We have been coming down to Tregenna and St Ives for a great many years now, as we have a timeshare which is absolutely beautiful with fabulous views. BUT ........ we just couldn't sit back and say nothing about our experience of the HOTEL in September. We decided to book a Castle Sea View room the night before we booked in to our timeshare as we love St Ives so much. However, despite receiving a discount for being owners, we were appalled at the condition of the room. It was as clean as possible, but unbelievably in need of an urgent upgrade, particularly as the actual price should have been £170 per night! The bathroom was really quite unacceptable, with fittings worse than a second rate B& B. The bed was very comfortable and the breakfast excellent. We don't want to go into too many damning details, as we have always been treated with absolute courtesy and feel a great loyalty to this lovely old place, but to charge these sort of prices is really not acceptable.

We couldn't believe that the lovely Brasserie restaurant which we have always eaten in during the summer months now closes at the end of September and all meals are now served in the main restaurant. There is obviously a reason for this, but those of you who know Tregenna will understand our disappointment. There were four of us eating. We were made very welcome and received very attentive service. However the meal I ordered which was detailed "St Ives Crab baked with Parmesan Crust, new potatoes and salad was a complete disappointment. It arrived on a scallop shell, but was so liquid I could have poured it onto my plate. It tasted absolutely revolting and was so puréed I couldn't detect any traces of crab at all. The waiter apologetically took it away and I chose something else. But of course by the time my second choice had arrived, everyone had finished theirs! This also happened last year when we both had to send something back.

To be fair, our week, as ever, was very enjoyable and the rate for our room was reduced when we had a word on checking out, but such a lot has to be done to this hotel to bring it up to the standards one expects from a purported 4 star hotel.

Room Tip: Go and inspect the room first.

Considering that you have been owners since 2000, I am quite surprised that you do not know that we are a three star hotel. I wonder if you have ever written any reviews regarding the many good times that you have had with us. You claim to feel a 'great loyalty' towards us, yet despite a significant reduction in your bill, you still chose to write this damning review.
The Executive Chef has been made aware of your comments regarding the crab bake and sends his apologies. Although, he did say that he served quite a few of that dish and did not receive any other complaints, and also that it was served in a crab shell.

We stayed here for a week in September and was extremely dissapointed with the apartment that we got by booking this through RCI timeshare.
The location was amazing the views stunning. Our apartment was so small you could hardly get anything in never mind 4 people the 2nd bedroom was bunk beds, the main bedroom the bed was tight against the wall, had a strange smell. The curtains didnt fit the track correctly this was the case right throughout each room, the bed needed replacing you rolled to the middle, the bathroom was in need of deep cleaning and modernising the curtains in here didnt even reach the floor. The lounge are was in need of new furniture. The table which was for 4 people you could only get 2 chairs comfortably other wise you would have to move furniture to seat 4 at the table, hence the other 2 chairs were not in the lounge 1 was in the hall the other in the bedroom. A lot of condensation in the place hence the strange smell we think. So beware if your booking this place through time share, however the furniture and decorations are down to the hotel. The staff were very pleasant.

I am very sorry that you did not enjoy your stay in your timeshare exchange accommodation. You correctly mention that the furniture and decoration of the property is our responsibility and we will certainly endeavour to rectify the issues that you mentioned. However, the property that you were allocated is wholly the decision of RCI. If you feel that the property did not correspond to what you exchanged, I suggest that you contact them. Thank you for complimenting our staff.

All I can say is this Hotel is fantastic, great food, hospitality and a nice room. Will be staying more often here. Every night you get a different varied menu for dinner with a selection of fine wines or bear ECT, the food is something else and is truly out of this world. The hotel staff are all very helpful and friendly, you can request most things and they will organise it for you.

Room Tip: There all great rooms from what I hear

My husband and I stayed at the Treganna Hotel in one of the West Wing Sea View rooms and were quite disappointed. Although the view was fantastic the state of the room and the cleanliness were not up to what we expected when paying over £900 per week. The left side door of the double wardrobe did not have a knob, just a bolt coming through to the outside. The right side doors of the wardrobe had to be held closed with a rubber band. The carpets didn’t look like they had been vacuumed in a while, there was water left in the kettle from the previous guests and my husband found an empty condom wrapper on the floor beside the bed. One of the two windows would not stay open, kept sliding down. There was so much dust around the room…on top of the four poster bed, on the lamps and tables. The grounds are lovely, the staff very helpful and friendly but never again. We read several reviews on Trip Advisor, both before and after our stay, and with all of the good reviews we cannot understand how our experience was so bad. A very disappointing stay considering it was our last holiday of the year.

Room Tip: Make sure to request a sea view room when making a booking, don't rely on upgrading at the time...

Don't stay in this cottage - this restored 18th Century cottage is spacious and well-equipped but exceedingly damp. A definite NO, particularly if you are taking children or elderly adults. We were given a de-humidifier to move around the cottage during our week's stay in August. (We had to ask for this but our request to speak to the Housekeeper and suggestion that perhaps we be given a free change of bed-linen mid-week was ignored! All this suggested to us that at this busy time, hotel staff really didn't want to speak to us, didn't need our custom and aren't too fussed if we ever return again!) We poured away approx. 3 - 5 litres of water, twice a day. A metal clasp on an item of clothing turned rusty during the week. By running the de-humidifier appliance 24 hours a day, all week, we managed to enjoy our stay in St Ives which is very beautiful. The hotel is well-located and the grounds stunning. We will return to this part of Cornwall again but will not stay at this hotel again - such a shame - the buildings interiors in no way match the gardens. A lot of money to spend on our week's Summer holiday in August - Tregenna Castle, you need to do much better and not just rely on your location alone!

Room Tip: Didn't stay in the hotel so cannot comment but don't stay in Lady Chatterley's self-cate...

Please be assured that your suppositions that we did not wish to speak with you, or do not need your custom, or do not care if you visit us again are not true. We do care, we do want you to return and endeavour to rectify any problems. I can only assume that word about extra linen did not reach our housekeepers. I am very sorry that you were inconvenienced and disappointed, but I am glad that you did manage to enjoy your holiday. I am also sorry that you will not be back to visit us again.

Back yet again, just a two night stay. All was perfect, the evening meal has improved, the head waiter made room so our party could eat together and for breakfasts all 12 of us seated on one table. The head waiter seems to have been there forever, and its a delight to see him direct his staff, with no fuss. On arrivel our twin was a double, that was soon sorted. One small fault on previous stays the reception staff worked from the back room, there was allways someone on front desk this stay.
