“Olde Worlde Building but does that have to mean "tired"?”
Reviewed April 18, 2013

Spent 3 nights here and my observations are:

Good: Stunning from the outside only the main entrance is round the back not the pretty one you see on all the pics. Public areas all nice and modern inside. Staff very friendly (Mention in dispatches for Lisa a receptionist who was fab). Hotel has a golf course, spa, bar restaurant etc.

Bad: The rooms are a little tired, exposed pipes that could do with conduit round them to tidy them up, pool area a little grubby. Being picky the10 min woodland walk into town is fine (downhill) coming back could be a real slog for elder guests. Prices £4.50 for apint of lager and a fiver for a glass of vino? Behave!

Overall A nice stay but worth £100+ a night for a 3 star hotel? Naa would stay closer to town next time.

Room Tip: Book one when there is an offer on!

Thank you for your review, your comments and for complimenting our staff.
Our bar prices are comparable to other hotels, restaurants, bars and pubs in the area. Wine prices start at £3.25 for a white and red, and £3.75 for a rose. Beer prices start at £3.70. Furthermore, I checked your receipts, and it was a large glass of wine that you purchased and it was premium larger.
Also, it is a little unjust that we be judged harshly because there are hills in St.Ives.

My husband and I were supposed to go to Florida for his Easter leave, but since the UK Border Agency has my passport at the moment, we were forced to go somewhere local. We tried to get as far south as possible, placing us in St. Ives. After doing a bit of research, Tregenna Castle seemed to be a great location, claiming to be within a SHORT walking distance to the city center - not at all. If it was just the two of us, sure, but we have a 3 month old. The staff were OKAY, but nothing memorable. We also took advantage of the spa. I got the luxury pedicure and it was awful. The girl that gave it to me was lovely, but I honestly could have done a better job myself with a home pedicure kit, for the price, it totally wasn't worth it. The rooms are really dated...stuff glued to the wall - tacky. Another annoying thing was that you had to use your own phone to contact the hotel internally or pay 50p to use the room phone. We had dinner in the hotel and I believe I may have gotten food poisoning - I ended up spending our last day and night in the room puking my guts out. Positives - there's a beautiful view of the sea and there's a bar. I wouldn't stay here again even if I got a free night.

I am sorry that you did not enjoy your time with us and that you will not return.
One ought to take care when spreading libelous accusations regarding food poisonig, especially when they are unsubstantiated and untrue.
To reach reception one should just press zero, as it says in the information booklet, and as one does in most hotels, worldwide.

Tregenna Castle Hotel in St.Ives for us was a distinct tale of two halves. The location and hotel itself was very good, an old and very large building in extensive grounds with a golf course, holiday lodges and woodland walks thrugh its 72 acres of grounds. Sea veiws across St.Ives bay was outstanding even with low cloud mist and rain. On arrival the receptionist was friendly, fun, full of information and very helpful. We decided to eat in the main bar and sampled the fish in beer batter and chips. The food was deleivered fast was hot and the service was friendly, fast effiecient, we also sampled the scones and cream tea. The scones were hot, large and very fresh together with clotted creame and jam. This was served by a waiter who was a little brisk, whether this was due to assumptions he may have made on our order as there were three for dinner yet only two for scones afterwards, I am not sure, however, it left a distinct flavour that was not well recieved. After we let the food go down we thought we would try the gym and pool, well what a contrast, we appraoched the reception of the gym and two young lads were sitting there, didnt ask us what we wanted, if we were guests of the hotel or what the process was. They did not supply hotel guests with towells, hoever, they were avialable at a cost of 50p each. The towel was small old and very hard. There were little signage of where to go and the chnaging roomd were through the main area of the gym. After changing I went to the gym and the equipment, I couldn't work, I belong to a gym and so using machines should not have been difficult, after ten mins I gave up and joined my wife in the pool. The pool is approached via small steps, which were wet and not easy to use, and were only wide enough for using one at a time. The pool was in use by several people, which should have been good. but wasn't the water felt gritty and dirty. The hot tub was nice and hot. The area used to be outside and had a glass cover, which was very condesated and dripping water everywhere. The sauna was good, dry and hot, the steam room was cold. The showers, oh my the showers, press a button to operate the spray and it lasts for ten seconds only. and was COLD! no wonder the twoells were so small as you could only get a small part wet from under the shower so there was no need to have a large towell. The night was ok, the room was too hot and as they had difficultes with seagulls entering rooms etc the windows could not open more than a crack. There was a wedding on and heard no noise, it was very quiet and peaceful. The bed, although a twin and not a double was comfortable. A small TV not more than 16inch and for a large room not big enough to enjoy from the bed. We stayed on a Saturday night and Breakfast on Sunday did not open until 08:30, we went down at 08:35 and expected a nice hot breakfast given the nice food we had the day before, Oh Dear, The Bacon looked like it had been standing since 7 am, hard dry and not tasty. The Fried eggs tired, cold and starting to congeal, mushrooms cold. the sausages were wonderful, hot and very tasty. The plates were also cold, no fresh fruit, toast deleivered to the table but no requests were asked for. All in all the Saturday was good, Fish and chips excellent, Gym and pool dissapointing and breakfast useless. I completed a feedback form and left it with them. I was not asked if everything was ok when I checked out and so did not have the opportunity to raise this when I left. What a pity.

Room Tip: Avoid the gym and pool and dont expect too much for breakfast. Ask for a sea view you will be overw...

Thank you for taking the time to write and post this extensive review.
We are very pleased that there were many aspects of your visit that gave you cause to compliment us, thank you.
That there were areas that disappointed you, I am sorry. I also apologise for the apparent ambivalence of two members of our staff.
Without wishing to be contradictory, there are some points that I would like to mention:
Guests are welcome to use the towels provided in their rooms.
We do provide a variety of fresh fruit at breakfast, including a selection of melons, prunes, grapefruit, mandarins, apple and more. Furthermore, we seldom receive complaints regarding breakfast, but regularly receive compliments.
For the benefit of potential future guests reading this review and response; if you have an issue or complaint, you do not need to be invited in order to share it. Please feel free to broach the subject, unbidden.

Our suite was very spacious and large, with a stunning sea view. Breakfast was varied and nice.
Tregenna Castle, though, is all about location. We spent two nights there and it has been a wonderful experience, because of the environment and the surroundings, which are beautiful.
Reception service standards were just average, so do not expect an excellent customer service (they called us in order for us to vacate the room because we were 5 minutes late for check out...) That was the first time that something of the kind had ever happened to me, so take it for what it is, an actual 3* service hotel set in a beautiful castle with a magnificent 5* view.

Room Tip: Castle Sea View rooms are very spacious and bright, with a suite layout, and offer a lovely sea view...

Thank you for your review and for your compliments.
I am extremely sorry that you were unimpressed by your reception to the hotel. Ordinarily, this is an area which only receives compliments, however the Reservations Manager has been made aware.
I am sorry that you took umbrage of being asked to vacate your room, after the check out time. We happily make arrangements for an extended check out, upon request. Perhaps if you visit us again we can arrange that for you.

This hotels best feature is by far the location. Its a very old grand building so don't expect modern facilities, although the hotel are constantly at work updating areas. We have been visiting for over five years now and always book a west wing sea view room, which are probably the best rooms here. The rooms are a little dated and tired in areas, but are always clean and cosy. The bathrooms are very basic and we have always found clean and serving the purpose for what they are meant for. When we first started coming the break fast wasn't that good but we have noticed an improvement over the last 2years,well cooked and not greasy, always hot and fresh.A fantastic location and pleasant walk down to the town.If you spend your holiday going through every thing with a fine tooth comb then you will probably see small faults such as a bit of peeling paint or a door that's a bit squeaky, but this is a big old building what do you expect,we've never been disappointed such a fab location, clean and comfortable great views don't listen to too much negativity,we always book when they have deals on also so it's a pleasant little break that doesn't cost too much.

we had a cheap weekend break with Groupon. The stay was lovely and the hotel busy. The food in the restaurant was good and so were the breakfasts. Our only moan is that for some reason our room wasn't serviced the last evening so we had to request someone to come and change the towels , replenish the drinks . The added bonus was that a car club were staying the weekend and on the Sunday there was a display of classic cars which was great. The receptionists were extremely helpful and friendly and we enjoyed our stay.
