“Castle on the Hill”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

A very pleasant four nights spent overlooking St Ives. The hotel was in excellent condition in extensive grounds and looked as if it had been newly redecorated. None of that cold and musty smell so common in larger and older hotels in the Winter. Friendly and attentive staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. The restaurant (or more accurately the Brasserie at this time of year in Winter) had a good choice on the menu though after four nights of eating both my own meal and a large part of my companion's I had exhausted the choice and was glad the menu changed on the last night. Breakfast was the now very commonplace buffet with a good choice including porridge to order and the usual Continental alternative. A highlight on our arrival was the 2-for-1 cream tea with some excellent scones and a very good pot of tea. Certainly worthy of another visit in the future.

Our Executive Chef was pleased to read that you enjoyed eating with us and that you were able to sample most of what was on offer. There has been a quite extensive new Brasserie menu introduced, that you probably experienced on your last night.
Thank you very much for your lovely review and for taking the time to post it. We sincerely hope that you do visit us again.

My partner and I stayed for one night in January. We were supposed to be going up country (we live in St. Austell, Cornwall) but the bad weather prevented us doing so. This was very much a late booking. I was still pleasantly surprised at the price. £60 bed and breakfast.

When you approach the castle it looks amazing. Reception also looks very grand. We were quite surprised by the bedroom (139). Frayed carpets, iron burns on the carpet, black marks on the window frames, damp spots on ceiling in bathroom, old bath although clean it was stained. I must stress everything was clean we just felt it was a bit shabby and didn't reflect the rest of the building. Our bed was two singles pushed together, not ideal. Our room was around the back, overlooking the car park. I'm not sure if the sea view rooms are of the same quality.

For the evening meal we had to choose form a pub style menu. Pasty and chips, scampi and chips, steak and chips etc. Food was good and well presented (and 20% off) just not what we were expecting. Again, I'm not sure if this is standard or just for this particular weekend. Had we bothered to look at the menu before sitting down we would have gone to a restaurant in the town. The room itself was quite dark and in my opinion needed updating. I know its an old castle and should retain its character but in our opinion the room was a bit tired and required some tlc. Just our opinion, please don't let this put you off.

Breakfast was a buffet, lots of choice and good quality. No complaints.

All in, our stay cost us £102. As a couple we could quite easily spend that on a night out at home so can't complain.

Staff great, Location great, food good quality.

If we paid top dollar I think we would have been a little disappointed just because of the bedroom and pub style dinner menu but as we didn't Tregenna castle gets a 4/5 from us.

Would be a 3/5 if we paid top money.

Thank you very much for your extensive review and for sharing your experiences.
The Brasserie menu has been completely revamped, recently, and has an extensive array of fine cuisine available. It was changed on the day that you checked out. However, there was a full carvery also available on that night.
As I explained to you, in my response to your comment card, the beds were not 'pushed together', they are zip linked in order to convert the room to a twin, if necessary.
We are very glad that overall you enjoyed your time with us and found our staff great.

This hotel looks impressive and offers a comfortable stay. I agree that it needs modernising in some ways but it stll has that charm and I would certainly go back. The staff were friendly and when we did have an issue over dinner, the restaurant manager attended imediately and we were certainly satisfied with the outcome. The view over St.Ives bay is stunning. I wish we could have stayed longer. Look forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: A room with a sea view is well worth the extra.

We stayed here just for a night while traveling around England's South West. Finding the hotel entrance, then finding out way along the long series of driveways to the carpark then locating the entrance door was a big challenge arriving in the dark! This hotel is in drastic need of some signage and lighting. If you think you'll be arriving after dark, stay somewhere else!
The room we got overlooked the ocean, but the windows were dirty and locked shut so couldn't appreciate the view. The room was aged - curtains hanging off the rail, mould in the bathroom, someone else's bath product was left in there so who knows if it had been cleaned, paint pealing off the ceiling. All of this I could deal with til we went to the restaurant "Brasserie" at the hotel. The menu was huge, which should have been a sign, but we didnt want to negotiate the treacherous entrance way again in the dark so we went for it. Big mistake. Both our meals were completely unacceptably bad. This is our 9th week of travel through the USA, Canada, England and now Europe, eating out 3 meals a day and to date we are yet to be given such terrible food - let alone at the price they charge, and with such terrible problem resolution from the staff. The food was awful, but we were exhausted and the servings so small we got through it. We brought up that we were dissatisfied at the end of our meal when we were asked how it was by the waitstaff. The supervisor was quickly ushered over, even though we said that we couldnt be bothered talking to anyone about it and wanted the cheque and to leave. We felt accosted by the supervisor, like naughty children, for daring to speak ill of it. It was the worst meal and worst service that we have received to date.

Room Tip: I would suggest choosing a room at a different hotel.

We are sorry that we failed to meet your expectations.
It is unfortunate that you chose to complain so vociferously, through this medium, rather than raise any issues with us during your stay.

Easy check-in, phoned late evening the nigth befor late room , com, all very smooth. The walk through the gardens to town saw the water falls @ there best. The room had all i wanted, i do like to have a bath @ night, & shower next day. The full breakfast was really good, and a added bonus, was not in usual room but on the front with the great views. Check-out so swift bill allready paid. My only disapointment was that i tried to book 4 days in Feb, all booked up.I do intend to return again, with my wife, we only do the deals Tregenna offer, but what deals.
