We had a lovely meal here two nights ago. We had reviewed previous trip advisor comments and decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed - it was simply fab!
My husband had the special red mullet to start and then the fish stew and I had crab and crayfish cocktail to start and seafood risotto. We decided to share all the food as it all looked (and tasted) delicious!
We had reviewed a trip advisor comment which was less than complimentary about the risotto, and I have to say this was unfounded. We found that the proportion of seafood and shellfish very pleasing - quite like a paella really. Just perfect and very filling.
We also had a lovely lemon curd cheesecake (to share as we were so full!) which was also lovely.
This meal has been a highlight of our holiday.

The meal started well with friendly staff and good starters but we had pre ordered the cold seafood platter and the hot seafood platter which were both very disappointing. The seafood on the cold platter was just not fresh and the langoustines and prawns disintegrated as we tried to peel them. There was an empty crab shell on the top of the platter when it was brought in and was served with hot mussels in a sauce which was very odd. The hot platter was in a tomato sauce and the fish also did not seem as if it was fresh i.e frozen. For the price that was charged (£80 for the cold and £70 for the hot) and with the local resources available, it should have been so much better. They did take the cold platter cost off the bill but it was just very embarrassing and upsetting.

Sorry to read of your disappointment with your seafood platters at Seagrass. We would like to say for the record and for the purpose of reviewers reading your review, is that our seafood and fish is definitely fresh!
Unfortunately the prawns and langoustine were cooked a little too long in the cooking liquor which was why they disintegrated - we have discussed this with the kitchen to ensure this does not happen again. To that we do apologise and hence why we deducted the whole amount off your bill. Until we open the crab, we do not know how much brown meat is inside - it was not an empty shell and did contain some meat. The reason we cook the mussels separately in a broth is because we think it is a more tasty accompaniment to just cold mussels without any sauce. With regards to the fish in the hot platter this is fresh from Newlyn and most definitely not frozen. Sorry you felt upset and embarrassed this was certainly not our intention.

We were given a very friendly welcome here and given a table even though we hadn't booked.

The starters - beetroot and orange salad with halloumi - and squid - were excellent. I have had beetroot and orange salad several times but never with halloumi added which makes it more interesting.

The hake main courses were good except the kale tasted just a bit too much of that deep fried oil after taste and the chicken was delicious but the gravy was a bit too plentiful and overbearing for the celeriac puree which got lost in the sea. I would have preferred the gravy to be separate.

Chocolate brownie, although not cheap at £7, was superb and the peanut butter swirls really offset the sweetness of the brownie and the ice cream. I don't even like peanut butter usually but this combination of flavours was genius.

All in all a very good meal and by far the best one we ate in St Ives.

The Seagrass is a super restaurant in terms of ambiance, food and staff standards.
The experience for the diner is of a modern, Now type environment with extremely pleasant and professional service.
The menu was adventurous yet everything was beautifully cooked and served.

We ate at Seagrass tonight after booking a table at the last minute. We turned up at 5:30 with 3 tired, hungry children and it could have gone either way. As it was we had an excellent time. The food was fantastic, the children's options were imaginative and perfectly cooked and the staff were lovely - even changing our daughter's dessert as she didn't like what she'd chosen. I highly recommend it and will certainly return.
