“Exceptional Views of St Ives, great location and friendly / helpful staff”
Reviewed March 1, 2011

My husband and I held our wedding celebrations at the Pedn Olva 09 - we returned to the hotel last weekend (far too long between visits). We had a fab time on both occassions. The staff remembered us from our initial visit and were as friendly, welcoming, helpful and courteous as ever. We love the view, the location and set up of the hotel. There may be the reviews that say the rooms are small but thats a small price to pay when you get the views that you do as the hotel is based on the rocks right next to the beach. Its stunning- especialy admiring the view with a glass or two of champagne. There may be wear and tear around the hotel but only what youd get over a normal season(more painting than anything) So, Its worth the extra money for the views, to hear the waves and wake up to see the view of st ives/the sea/porthminster etc and its location. Food was great too - breakfast and gala dinners in Dec highly recommended.

We just had a difficult time rating the Pedn Olva. The previous reviewer rather nailed it...fabulous location and views but the hotel needs...must have a makeover to survive. The service was excellent...everyone was cheerful and attentive. The room...not so much.

Yes, green astroturf on our unprivate balcony...2 really good sized windows, and good drapes to block the sun/give privacy, but the room was poorly arranged. And that fact really detracted. If I wasn't very careful I would bump my head on the wall getting out of bed. My husband had a little more room on his side because of the window reveal. The tea set-up was really glorious, but hard to use, slated under the TV as it was, and it couldn't be moved. The one easy chair in the room was in front of the wardrobe and used mainly as a flat surface for overspill from our belongings.

The bathroom was a horror...we must have stayed in the same room the previous reviewer did, because our bathroom, although nicely turned out with more up-to-date fixtures, had a double door with a gap between sides...not very private at all. The toilet was up on the platform with the shower (platform must have been to allow the shower plumbing) and it was fine. The shower was so tiny I can't imagine anyone being able to clean off in there without constantly bumping the sides. I elected to sponge...while my husband braved the shower. He said he should have sponged too...

We ate dinner in the restaurant, and that was a great decision! The meal was fabulous--very tasty and well presented--and the server was attentive and well-informed. Breakfast was also very good--plentiful choices, well cooked to order and nicely served.

Overall, I have to say that our stay was puzzling. But the view made up for a lot, as did the Class A service....but the view won't get the Pedn-Olva through the next year or two. Especially at the prices they charge.

I have recently stayed in room 29, a late booking at a late booking rate £89. The cost of the room with a balcony overlooking St Ives harbour normally for bed and breakfast is £146 which I certainly would not normally pay for this room.. I have stayed in St Ives and Penzance on a number of occasions and would say that as far as location is concerned this hotel would be hard to beat - St Ives is on the doorstep and the train station and its car park is just up the steps. The hotel is relaxed, the staff are friendly but slowish to serve you, the main issue really was the room as I definately wouldn't want to spend more than one night there, although the bed was comfortable the whole room was tired and needs a makeover. The balcony helped make the room larger but this had astro grass on the floor which in January with some rain was very very soggy and not very pleasent as the water had built up. The room was so compact that the luggage rack to put your suitcase on couldn't be opened out to use. The chair in the room couldn't be sat upon and if you left it by the bed you couldn't access the bed to get in and out. The toilet and shower is in a built in unit with double opening doors so there is no privacy, the shower although not mouldy smells musty and the handbasin is outside in the bedroom. There is a hospitality tray in the room with a good selection tea, coffee, chocolate etc but it is quite difficult actually using the kettle and coordinating the making of anything because of the space issue. On the other hand I don't think you can beat lying in bed and watching the cormorants on a rock or the seals bobbing up and down in the water. The room was just so small and so congested that the whole experience needs to be balanced, the view or location couldn't be better and the room is just ok for one night in my opinion at a late booking rate. For breakfast there is a nice selection of cereals, nuts, fruit and yogurts which I enjoyed and we had the Cornish cooked breakfast which was quite greasy and what hotel actually serves and fried egg with a solid yolk. There are a selection of other alternatives including smoked salmon and scrambled egg etc which did look nice. The breakfast is served in a room that looks towards the beach and really takes full advantage of the lovely view. On reflection, I would say that because of this hotels unique location I would recommend staying but this hotel does need a serious makeover and having seen other rooms including the bridal suite which has a bath in the actual room this hotel probably needs a rethink with regard to what todays Customers actually want from a stay.

Excellent outlook from rooms over the sea and the waves breaking on the rocks below. The rooms are rather small, but clean and with that excellent view. Staff lovely as always, although the receptionist did seem a bit distracted with other paperwork - still nice and pleasant though !

Stayed 3 nights over New Year and just adored this place. The location is absolutely perfect with stunning views of the harbour and Porthminster Beach from almost all the rooms, the bar, lounge and restaurant. It is a 2 min stroll through the cobbled streets to the delights of the harbour and all the fab shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. The staff are all wonderful and cannot do enough to help you have a great time, really warm and friendly. Breakfast is really good, the coffee is fab and there are lots of great restaurants to try a short walk away. We can't wait to go back.

We have stayed at the PednOlva under "Seasonal Special Offer" Terms at this time of year for the past 2 years and been very pleased as detailed in earlier reviews.
We wanted to see the current Tate Exhibition and despite a promo offer from the Porthminster decided on the Pedn Olva once again and managed to get our "usual Room No 32 - great! We arrived in clear skied sunshine despite the weather elswhere in the country and had a GREAT meal on the first evening followed by a perfect day again the following day - sun, clear skies, walks along the cliffs out to Clodgy lunch and a great visit to the Tate.

We decided we would eat in again the second night as the previous night was so good and its a bit chilly to go out on the town with so many places closed . Sadly this was a wrong decision as apart from being the only ones in the restaurant the service so excellent the night before was limited to a shared job betwen the bar and the restaurant by a young inexperienced lad. The food WOULD have been OK but we were kept waiting unduly as a result of which the food ordered had obviously bee kept warm as evidenced by the baby carrots "welded" to the plates. We did NOT bother with dessert as well over an hour for 2 courses and the prices charged were not attractive. I did speak to a duty manager about our disappointment and was offered a refund of the wine cost but it did not appear on the final bill and nothing was said by anyone prior to our departure the following day.
A disappointment after two previous good visits and a brilliant start to our stay.

We were greeted by friendly and helpful staff, shown to our delightful room - amazing views! The bed was extremely comfortable, and had the luxury of a full sized bathroom. This overnight stay was a birthday treat, sadly though, there were only 5 residents (including us) and we were the only ones seated in the restaurant. Very good choice for breakast - then we departed, and drove the 10 miles home again!! Can highly recommend this hotel, especially as we got a last minute deal...............
