“Worth visiting”

We only popped in because it began to rain but were so glad we did. It's nice to see artwork displayed like this...I even bought a painting.

“Some OK art - nothing worth purchasing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 17, 2012

We visited the various galleries around St Ives and found this to be OK but nothing worth purchasing in it. Now that the original gent in charge has retired it seems various artists are visiting in 'stints'. The one there over half term was friendly but the art was not anything I'd buy.

So sorry to hear that your visit was not as good as we would have hoped.

Rest assured that the gallery has been managed for the last seven years by Petronilla Silver who has a wealth of knowledge and experience.

I am not sure that we have ever used ad-hoc artists to man the fort, but if on the day you came in this was the case then it is certainly not the norm.

Do please pop back in if you are ever in St. Ives and we will do our best to impress.

Whilst this is a rather belated response, it was indeed sad when Gillie retired, but we have tried to keep the gallery moving with the times and now offer a larger more beautiful space than before.

I hope that he would be pleased with how the gallery has evolved

“An Experience to be Remembered”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 22, 2006

As well as housing some of the most interesting and prestigious modern art to be seen in St. Ives this gallery is worth visiting to meet the wonderful Henry Gilbert. He is a very kind and gentle man who shows a genuine interest in all who visit his gallery, irrespective of whether they are there to purchase or browse. I have spent some very enjoyable times in conversation with him on my visits to the gallery. On one occasion I expressed an interest in a book about St. Ives art that I noticed in the shop. I asked him the price and Henry explained that it was his own personal copy and promptly gave it to me as a gift. inside he wrote 'with Best Wishes Henry Gilbert'. It's well worth dropping in and having a look around. It could prove to be one of the highlights of your visit.

Thank you DiningDemon for your feedback

Whilst this is a rather belated response, you are no doubt aware that Gillie retired from the gallery about seven years ago.

Since then we have strived to continue and improve, and now offer a wonderful space over both floors of the building and show what we feel is some of the finest contemporary art in the South West.

I hope that he would be pleased with how the gallery has evolved and if you are ever in St. Ives please pop in to see for yourself.

“Wonderful collection of interesting pictures!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2001

I have bought two pictures from this galley and am very happy with them. Looking at them each day cheers me up.
The owner of this gallery (Mr Henry Gilbert) is one of the town's experts on twentieth-century art. He can tell you about the artists who flocked to St Ives over the years but he also stocks very recent works by artists who appeal to him. He was an architect and the pictures he stocks are sometimes by artists with architectural training, like Ffiona Lewis, or show geometric lines, like John Wells.
I strongly recommend this gallery and also the Belgrave and Penwith Galleries, to people with an interest in St. Ives art.
