From breakfast through morning coffee to lunch, afternoon tea, tapas and dinner the Porthmeor Cafe has an excellent selection. The salt and pepper squid can't be beaten: the lemon meringue pie is a legend! The cheeses were delicious there are several to choose from. The view is amazing and has been mentioned by others. Although it's by the beach and could be chilly sometimes, the booths have heaters so it's great for any time.

This cafe is just outside the Tate in St Ives and sits overlooking the beach. There are tables outside or, for a more wet or blustery day, an inside area. We had lunch inside because it was a slightly unpredictable day. On the day we visited, there was no problem in getting a table, but we have seen it very busy on other days. The food is really nice. I had a Spanish omelette which was not huge but was so full of flavour it didn't need to be bigger. The desserts were equally as good. Service from the young team was relaxed but attentive. And to complement the good food, the view across Porthmeor beach makes this a great place to eat

As its Tripadvisor ranking reveals this is one popular place, so popular advance booking is essential, and there's the rub.
We booked a 'pod', a small space featuring weatherproof bench seating on three sides around a fixed table, a radiant heater at the back and the side facing the beach left open - because they are reputedly THE place in St Ives for a scenic (romantic) meal.
Not if you arrive in town pursued by a great grey curtain of murky wet muck, they aren't, and that's before the wind picks up.
When we booked the forecast was fine (Doh!) and the way the pods are fitted out sounded as if it would be okay, which it was... kinda.
Don't get me wrong, the food was fine, it could have been an outstanding experience if we got the whole sunset-over-the-ships's-rail package but like every coastal town St Ives is 'freshened' by the breeze on a good day and blasted on a bad one.
Generally the sun shines - it's how the whole artist's colony Tate St Ives thing got started, after all- but when the weather closes in it's like most places on the coast: cold, damp, depressing.
I've been trying and failing to come up with a description that conveys what it was like and the best I can come up with is to imagine two people who travelled all day wearing waterproofs over all the clothing they packed sitting in a beach hut in Worthing in winter.
It's an exceptionally well-appointed beach hut, one that comes highly recommended and so close to your hotel it the waitresses hardly get wind-burn as they scurry across the short stretch of wet tarmac between your hut and the hotel as fast as their flip-flops allow but the whole time you keep thinking to yourself 'Why in god's name didn't I book a table in the ******* restaurant?'

Had lovely tapas & drink here....with stunning views however we were constantly annoyed by a member of staff who continually shouted over the top of us to her mates on the beach below....I really wasn't interested in Sharma's social life....so to be honest a quiet word in her ear wouldn't go a miss to avoid loosing customers.....wen we brought it to her attention she just laughed with no mention of an apology. We had booked a table for an evening meal but due to her behaviour we decided to dine elsewhere......rating this as a one due to Sharma
