“Magical Evening”
Reviewed July 19, 2013

Last week we enjoyed a wonderful evening meal in the restaurant after a heavenly pre-dinner bottle of the local Camel Valley Brut leisurely consumed on the deck against a breath-taking landscape and sunset.

The menu was excellent as was the food and the staff were friendly and helpful.
We were only passing through this time, but have stayed at the hotel a number of times. It is a delightful, almost secret, place, hidden and sheltered from the world yet close to all the wonders of North Cornwall and its amazing coast line.

It’s well worth a visit.

Picture the scene. It's a Saturday night. In a tourist-crowded area of beautiful North Cornwall, a restaurant with a great view and delicious food stands half empty. You'd think they'd be glad to see a party of 7 arrive to claim their reserved table. Apparently not. We walked into the restaurant to be totally ignored by the waiter. This was awkward, but we're grown ups, so we find our own table. It's not that hard, the place is half empty after all. We choose our food, and try to catch the waiter's eye. And try. And try. Can it be true? Is he ignoring us, like a 15 year old boy ignores the girl he snogged last night? We wave. We jump up and down. The staff stare fixedly at the floor. After 20 minutes, we get up and order at the bar. And then we talk about how bad the service is - and it's a good job we have a topic of conversation to hand, because the food takes 45 minutes to arrive. And when it does, the waiter is forced to actually approach our table, which is clearly terribly difficult for him and he behaves as if we are a huge inconvenience who have been sent by a small deity expressly designed to irritate him.

I'm sorry, staff of Longcross. We clearly offended you but since you never actually spoke to us, I'd love to learn how.

The food here is fresh and delicious. But as the atmosphere makes your freezer look warm and inviting, I'd never go back.

Had family lunch here just last week. As the weather was warm, we sat on the terrace where the all round views are amazing. The food was excellent, and even though busy, the service was good too. We had no complaints, and will definitely return as a couple, perhaps for dinner.

Excellent food, especially breakfasts and the Victorian gardens were an unexpected treat, with so may different plants and shrubs leading to a lovely pool is a very tranquil setting. Our grandchildren enjoyed going into the garden through the key-coded gate that made it seem like a secret garden. Good plan area also. An ideal base to visit all around the Cornish coast.

Room Tip: We chose a standard room on the top floor, a little cramped due to beams, so would go for a higher g...

Looked forward to spending the weekend here, however on arrival noted the state of the exterior, the entrance is in need of a good clean up and a coat of paint, the whole place needs attention. Our room was comfortable but the television was too small for the room and plugged into an extension lead, the same lead had to be used for the kettle and just about reached. The furniture was a mixture of old and new, the bedside lamps were in need of a good dusting, the curtains had damp stains on them and the bath had the previous occupants used soap left on the shower gel dispenser. We decided to dine at the hotel in the evening, the meal was average but nothing special for the prices charged, there is better elsewhere. The views are stunning from the dining room, however we were served breakfast in another room with tables all very close together and very uncomfortable cane chairs. This hotel could have so much to offer it is in a wonderful location with beautiful walks and scenery, for us it was very disappointing and did not offer the standard of accommodation expected for the price.

Thank you for your review. We are most surprised to read your comments about the entrance to the hotel, as there is a new conservatory/porch at the entrance, replaced brand new 2 years ago fitted by very respected local joiners. Also before you enter the front door one year ago we undertook an installation of brand new limestone path and timber trellis to lead in from the car park and another pebbled, boulder and amphora display, again with limestone path and inset led lights to guide guests in to the front door. The work was carried out by one of Cornwall's leading landscapers. We can only assume you might have stayed before we had this work done.
We note your other points but as we were unaware at the time we were unable to offer you an upgrade. We reinvest each year what we can to constantly improve the hotel's infrastructure. We receive frequent compliments from our regular hotel guests and restaurant diners on our on-going improvements programme.

We stayed at Long Cross for 3 days, seeing it as a convenient centre for walking the Port Isaac part of the North Cornwall coast path. There were some disappointing aspects. It is advertised as having Wi-Fi throughout but it was non-existent in our room and patchily accessible from the lounge. The restaurant served good food and the people were quite friendly and helpful. When we came to pay the only staff member available at 9.30 was also the breakfast waiter so there seems to be a bit of a staffing shortage. It gave a sloppy impression – perhaps it’s a seller’s market in that part of the world.

We stayed in the gate house, the room was basic, furniture was odd and mismatched. Wet room was very slippery and the shower was warm and not very powerful, only got hotter if you ran the cold water in the hand basin at the same time. breakfast selection was very good and the breakfast waitress very nice. Room over priced for the quality. Nice location for visiting local attractions.
