We have been coming to this little hotel for over 15 years now & we love it.Carina & Arpi work hard to make our stay special. The rooms are very clean & the breakfast is good. The price hasn't changed since we first visited so is very good value for money, especially when comparing to similar places in Fowey & Looe. The Blue Peter is worth a visit for a pint or three & meals at Couches,Nevilles,Somewhere & Nelsons were excellent.Polperro is such a wonderful village to visit & staying in The Claremont makes it comfortable, affordable & special.

We were highly impressed with the service given in this hotel. Carina made us feel so welcome - I've never felt so cared for in a hotel. It is well located in the heart of the quaint village and has its own car park, which means the convenience of being able to take your car into the village. Our room was extremely comfortable and always very clean. Breakfast was always great and served with a smile. Overall, a great experience.

The overarching point I would make, is that I stayed in the Claremont in July (high season), in a single room with breakfast, for the grand sum of £32 for a night. Whatever way you look at it, this represents great value. All my following comments should be viewed in this context.

Positives:

Very close to the centre of Polperro; reserved hotel car parking immediately opposite; room was clean and tidy; public areas were clean and tidy with a reasonably good ambiance; the lady on reception, who seems to do just about everything, was very friendly and helpful.

Negatives:

The single room I stayed in (number 5) is, without doubt, the smallest hotel room I have ever stayed in - and I have stayed in a few - but it was fine for my purposes and perfectly functional.
As has been stated by another reviewer, I am not a fan of carpet in the bathroom/toilet, for reasons of hygiene - even with old wooden floors, it should be possible to put down some form of vinyl covering.
The bathroom had no shampoo in it - unusual these days I think and it took me by surprise.
Breakfast is rather structured, as mentioned by other reviewers, for reasons given already by the hotel owner. The breakfast ingredients were, I thought, of rather average quality - specifically the sausage and bacon.
Finally, sound-proofing between rooms was not great.

Having said all of the above, observing other guests it was clear people seemed to be enjoying their stay, and as I said at the beginning, the value offered was faultless.

Top tips:

The Old Mill House pub nearby (less than 5 minutes walk) is a good spot for a pint of real ale (lots on offer) and great value home cooked food - three courses cost me less than £13. Also very friendly staff.
For a longer day out, try Padstow, on the north coast - it's lovely.
It is possible to drive a car a good way down into the village, if you want to drop off luggage - you can then return it to the car park at the entrance of the village.

Room Tip: Room 5, for a good value but short stay on your own. Too small for longer.

I would like to thank the reviewer for his very long and detailed review. Seeing that he only stayed for one night and also took the time to read all previous reviews, to which he referred, we must say that he is the most dedicated reviewer that we have experienced. We note what he said over the bathroom floor covering and taking into account the bathroom also being small, when the changed daily, toilet mat and shower mats are put down there is little room left to step onto the carpet. Saying that we only took over this hotel on the 1st June 2010 and we have already installed vinyl in 10 bathrooms. It is our intention to complete the remaining two rooms during the forthcoming winter.. Yes, Room 5 is a small single room but fully ensuite and as far as we are aware the only single room with ensuite facilities in the village. The room would be bigger if there were no ensuite facilities but we have found almost all guests much prefer ensuite facilities. Polperro is a small historical fishing village where space is very much at a premium but this is part of its charm and character which is one of the reasons Polperro is so popular. To avoid any misunderstandings we have floor plans of all our rooms on our Website so potential guests can ascertain the room size and layout prior to booking and the reviewer was informed of this prior to him confirming the booking. We are a little disappointed about his various other negative points and we have never had any complaints about the sound proofing of our rooms or the standard of our breakfast sausage and bacon. In fact most guests strongly compliment our breakfast as can be seen by previous reviews. We have found that most guests like to bring and use their own shampoo and we have also found that in today's difficult times most guests very much appreciate our very competitive pricing rather than paying a higher price for room amenities that are often not used. If we offered such amenities then we would have to ensure they were of a high standard to avoid complaints by over zealous reviewers such as the review in question. What was most disappointing was despite have stated that the room and hotel were clean and tidy he then only graded us with 3 stars. We take a great pride in the cleanliness of our hotel and this is almost always mentioned in reviews which are usually graded with the maximum 5 stars. We appreciate that the reviewer did mention that our hotel represents very good value and that his negative comments should be viewed in this context, however we wish that his rating score followed his written comments. Our son and daughter-in-law took us to this hotel as they had been a few times. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay for 4 days.Carina is absolutely fantastic doing everything to make your stay memorable. The cream tea (home made scones)are really something not to miss.Room very comfortable and very clean. The only thing i would say is that the seagulls are extremely loud but that is nature.Arpi will suddenly appear when you arrive and whisk your luggage up to your room and then vanish. All in all a fantastic stay and hope to be able to return in the not too distant future

My wife and I stayed for a week in room 11. It was large and comfortable, with a king size bed, sofa, table and four chairs. Unlike many of the higher priced business hotels I have stayed in, the bed was neither soft nor hard - just right! There was plenty of storage space, all the facilities that we needed, and more besides. Some of the furniture was a little old-fashioned, but this is not a premium priced city hotel, although the well-equipped bathroom makes you feel as though it is. The room and indeed the whole hotel, were spotlessly clean and well maintained. Everything worked! Add to that an adjacent car park free to residents, and Wi-Fi at nominal cost. Extremely good value in our opinion.

Carina greeted us with a friendly beaming smile, which hardly ever left her face the whole week! So warm, helpful and altogether charming, she was a constant delight and unique in my experience of many, many hotels.

This is the place to stay in Polperro.

We have just got back from a lovely long weekend in Cornwall, where we stayed at the Claremount, a quaint little hotel in Polperro. Not on the quay but just about as close as you can get without getting your feet wet. It provides a perfect location for walking the coastal path to Looe or Fowey. The location is also ideal for walks out to enjoy the delights of Polperro in the evening. The private car park is opposite the hotel and therefore very handy for loading and unloading. Karina, the manager, is very helpful and very pleasant. We arrived after 11 in the evening and she had stayed up so as to let us into the car park, check us in and show us to our room. The breakfasts are the best I've had in a hotel in a long time. So no complaints and I recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to stay in Polperro

We have just got back from another stay at this fabulous hotel and wish we were still there. From the moment you arrive Carina and Arpi are there ready to help take your luggage to your room. You are met with a warm smile and feel at home straight away. The hotel provides ample secure parking which is cctv monitored. The rooms are lovely and quaint a decent size and are spotless. The bathroom/shower facilities are excellent and are cleaned for you everyday with fresh towels always provided. A wide range of breakfast options are available from fresh fruit to a full English! Tea,coffee and toast is supplied generously and fresh Orange and Apple Juice are supplied at your convenience. The location of the hotel is excellent, right in the middle of Polperro and just a few minutes walk from the Harbour front with a stunning sea view. We will definitely be staying at the Claremont hotel in the near future. Please, if you are thinking about staying at this hotel then book up. You won't be disappointed! Don't be put off by the negative reviews and let Carina and Arpi show you how hospitable and genuine they are.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Welcome to the Claremont Hotel The Claremont Hotel is a privately owned and family run hotel centrally positioned in the heart of Polperro, offering very comfortable accommodation, and less than three minutes walk from what is probably the prettiest fishing harbour in south east Cornwall, if not in the whole county. The Claremont Hotel faces south overlooking the valley and rooftops, and is ideally positioned for a short walk to all the village attractions and facilities. The hotel and its accommodation has been modernised so that our guests enjoy the comfort that is expected these days, yet it still retains its character, as parts of the hotel date back to the17th century, when it was most probably a fisherman's cottage. Please note that the Hotel does not have views over the harbour. With effect from 1st June 2016 Introducing a new concept in providing low cost accommodation. Bed and Breakfast is being replaced by Bed on a Budget. Breakfast will not be served and will not be available. A saving on up to £20 per night over the previous Tariff. A cooked breakfast is becoming a thing of the past as people are becoming more health conscious but when available, as on holiday, it tends to be eaten as it is included in the price. Also it is tempting to remain in bed so either forego the lie in or get up for breakfast. Now you can stay in bed as long as you wish knowing that you have already made a saving on not having breakfast. Further savings have been made by reducing the amount of room service normally provided. In effect all this means is that we no longer change bed sheets and towels on a daily basis, however the bathmat will be changed each day, tea/coffee/milk will be topped up and your waste bin will be emptied each day. For stays of one week or more a full room service and change of bedding, towels etc will be carried out after 3 or 4 days at managers discretion. We have also reduced the reception hours and we no longer accept check-ins after 6.30pm and if guests do not arrive by 7pm the booking is classed as a no show and therefore cancelled. These cost savings in laundry, wages and materials are part of the cost reduction that Bed on a Budget is able to provide guests and the saving can enhance your holiday experience by using these cost savings as you wish. Children under the age of six years are not normally accepted ... more   less
