“One of the best B&Bs I've ever stayed in”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2013

I am very impressed with Venton Vean - and I've stayed in lots of B&Bs around the world! The house is very tastefully, but neutrally, decorated, so its bound to suit all tastes. The house itself is on a quiet street in Penzance. Not walking distance to the train station - and so probably most suited if you're renting a car.

But the neighbourhood is residential and upmarket, there's lots of free on-street parking right in front of the house. The house itself is set back from the street, and so the rooms are very quiet - no traffic sounds at all.

We stayed in Room 4 - the other part of our party stayed in room 2. Both rooms are great - room 4 has a bath, whereas room 2 only has a shower. If I had to choose, go for room 2.

Breakfast was amazing - there's a choice of hot breakfasts, from English to Spanish and also Mexican I believe - although the latter two you probably have to give notice in advance. In addition to the hot breakfast, there's cereal, juice, and fresh bread - including sourdough, which was a nice touch!

Beds were very comfy and we had a good night's sleep on both nights.

Definitely will be staying at Venton Vean if back in Penzance, and I think its set a new high for B&B standards, at least for me.

Room Tip: Room 2 only has a shower, Room 4 has a shower and bath.

Venton Vean is the most luxurious B@B we have ever stayed at!! Better than most hotels! Brilliant bathrooms and excellent decor make it feel as good (if not better) than home! We stayed in February when the weather was terrible but the highlight was the comfort and welcome at Venton Vean. A really good and interesting choice of quality breakfasts completes the experience. We will be back. We could do with more like this nearer home.

My wife and I recently returned from a trip to Cornwall, Salisbury and Waddesdon Manor. We will describe each area in separate reviews. Cornwall will be broken down into Penzance and St. Austell as we stayed in a separate B &B in each area.

We arrived @ London Heathrow and took the HEX to Paddington Station where we had about an hour layover before we caught a train to Penzance. It is a 5 1/2 to 6 hour train ride but gave us a chance to catch up on our sleep after leaving Houston and flying all night.

We arrived at the Venton Vean where we were met by Philippa Howes who runs the B & B with her husband, David. We were made to feel very welcome. It is a wonderful place to stay and use as a base to explore that part of Cornwall. We spent three nights and we would would have gladly spent many more as Philippa and David were so helpful in their suggestions of things to see and even loaned us an OS map to get around which was better than the maps I had. Breakfasts were varied and tasty.

The first evening we relaxed, walked downtown and ate at the Bakehouse where the food was good and the service very nice.

The next day we drove to St. Michael's Mt. where we walked across the causeway and took the boat back as the tide had come in. This is an attraction one should not miss and if one is a member of the UK National Trust or its American arm, the Royal Oak Society, the entrance fee is waived.

We then drove to Trengwainton Gardens which is only a few miles from Penzance. Trengwainton is truly a beautiful place to see with many flowers, trees, huge gardens of all types, walks, and also a tea room where the food was quite good. There was also a WW II type garden the English government wanted it's citizens ( The Home Guard) to plant and raise a pig. There is a replica of the Quonset type bomb shelter also depicted along with the type of gardens grown.

We had dinner at a pub, The Tolcarne, between Penzance and Newlyn where the seafood was good . It is about a 30-45 minute walk from the B &B but is quite pleasant as it is along the "promenade" or seawall walk between the two towns which almost abut one another.

Friday we visited St. Ives, a very quaint village, once a fishing center but now an artist's retreat, and the home of the Tate St. Ives Art Museum and the Barbara Hepworth House,Gallery and Museum. Both are well worth the visit as well as the village which is most picturesque.

From St. Ives we drove to Porthcurno to take in a matinee at the Minack Theatre. We saw the play, Antony and Cleopatra. It was great fun and I would recommend that anyone who is in the area to go and see this carved in the cliff theatre. Even if there is no production, it is worth going to and taking a tour of the theatre and the surround cliffs.

We ended the day with a trip to Mousehole, another picturesque village, where we dined on take out fish and chips from Janner's Fish and Chips, a national chain of fish and chips shops.

The next morning we had to pack our bags and go north to St. Austell where we started the second part of our Cornwall trip.

On the way to St Austell we had planned to stop and see Trevarno Gardens and the National Museum of Gardening . It is a good thing we mentioned this to Philippa as she advised us the garden had closed several months before and was no longer open to visitors. We changed our plans and upon her recommendation went to Glendurgan Gardens not far from Falmouth. It contained huge trees, a sub tropical river valley garden, camellias, rhododendrons and a cherry laurel maze among other beautiful plants and trees. It was a truly magnificent garden to see and there were so many plants we were unfamiliar with.

By now you know we do like to see gardens as the next stop was The Lost Gardens of Heligan, really a wonderful place to visit and is a resurrection of the gardens that were in place between 1770 and the First World War.There is so much to see here as well as gardening history and we would recommend this garden to anyone who has any interest in plants or gardening. Do not miss the Mud Maid. The Giant's Head and the Grey Lady as well as the walled gardens. There is so much to see here it is unbelieveable.

Our next stop was St Austell where the description of that area of our Cornwall trip will be found under the review of Langdale House B &B.

Room Tip: The B &B is across the street from Penlee Park which you can walk through to go into town. It is...

If bed and breakfast is for you then you cannot do better than Venton Vean.. It is beautifully decorated and furnished with attention to detail, lovely pictures, discreet and intriguing ornaments and a real sense of style appropriate to the size and age of the rooms. The food is delicious, all locally sourced so breakfast is a feast with home made jams, local sausages and bacon and bread, and many other choices. Room 3 with the spacious elegant en suite bathroom was lovely, with natural locally made toiletries. Philippa and David are the kindest and most helpful people. Eating out in the evening was no hardship either as Penzance has many very good restaurants with excellent menus for a reasonable price. The whole town is friendly too, lots going on and art galleries everywhere; everything accessible on foot through parks and delightful lanes from Venton Vean ( I had no car).

Room Tip: If you want a large bathroom I know that room 3 has one. There may be others.

A group of four of us (from the US) picked this B & B based on the trip advisor reviews, and they were absolutely accurate. This is a delightful, comfortable house with an excellent location - away from any traffic (except the Seagulls and Ravens), but within easy walking distance to everything. Phillipa is a gracious and excedingly helpful hostess. Please take her advice when chosing restaurants! She will not lead you astray. Breakfasts are fantastic, and if you are offered the Spanish chorizo, ask for two. Bathrooms are a bit tight by American standards, but comparable to the norm here. The fantastic, all natural toiletries make up for the lack of size, though. All in all, a wonderful stay. Thanks again!

Penzance is a great location for touring all the beauty of Cornwall. Large enough to offer amenities but not too tourist oriented. Any trip to this area requires a stay with Philippa at Venton Vean B&B. She's most willing to offer great advice on sites, restaurants, etc. and is most helpful in planning your day trips. The rooms are quite nice and the farm to table breakfasts are incredible. Our experience was very enjoyable.

Had a wonderful two-night stay in Venton Vean, a beautiful house located in a really nice and convenient area in Penzance beside a lovely park. Room 3 was great with a huge ensuite bathroom with fabulous bath. Philippa's cooking and baking were just brilliant, delicious homemade cake on arrival, terrific breakfasts and I must give a special mention to her pancakes which were the best I have ever had! Philippa and David made me feel so welcome in their home and gave great advice and tips for sightseeing and eating out. Venton Vean more than lives up to all the great reviews it has received, highly recommended.

Room Tip: The huge bathroom and fab bath make Room 3 really special.
