Set in a fine garden, with excellent shop and cafe. Welcoming staff. Great display of artists local to the area, and good temporary exhibits. There is also a small museum area upstairs.

The gallery had an interesting display, including artefacts from the surrounding area and an exhibition of the works of Sven Berlin. Visitors could avail themselves of refreshments in the adjoining cafe and enjoy the pleasant garden surroundings. Entrance was free on Saturdays.

I have been to this corner of Cornwall a few times now and have always included Penlee House and Tate St Ives as a must to visit.
I have got to say I always find Penlee House a nicer experience than Tate St Ives.
Maybe there is not the light effect of Tate St Ives, but the lay out and background info to the art is better.
The Sven Berlin exhibition was fascinating, and there is always some Newlyn School art to view.
Parking is easy. The cafe is good.

This is a small gallery converted from an elegant town house.
Their visiting exhibitions are Cornwall-related (Sven Berlin currently and before that Laura Knight and a comparison show of Breton and Cornish paintings) and are small enough to avoid that punch-drunk feeling which comes with bigger block-buster shows elsewhere. Yes there should be more Newlyn School paintings permanently on show, but there seems to be no available space.
Am I the only one to think Elizabeth Forbes is a better painter than Stanhope?
There are also interesting displays of local social history and archaeology.
There is a good shop and a better cafe, inexpensive car parking close by and, whilst you pay on weekdays, the Penlee is free on Saturdays (and closed Sundays).

The nice mix of art exhibition and museum. Coffee shop very good. Bit of a trek uphill if you are walking from the seafront trying to find it - approach it from town centre if on foot!
