We visited the Minack Theatre to see the theatre for ourselves at the end of the day. It was a particularly cold and windy day, but was well worth a visit. Fasinating to see the history of the theatre and what a wonderful setting it is. My next visit will be to see a performance.

I knew very little about the Minack Theatre before visiting Cornwall so when we finally got there it was a revelation. The stage literally hunkers over the cliff and the audience sit in steeply banked seats hewn out of the granite overlooking the sea. This is all the work of Rowena Cade - I have to admit that I'd never heard of her before this trip, but she turns out to have been a remarkable woman. She decided to make a theatre in the back garden of her house in Porthcurno and on her own, with the help of just two gardeners, she created the theatre and seating out of the granite cliffs. The whole thing is delightfully eccentric in the best sense of the word. The views of the sea from the tiered seating are spectacular and you can imagine what an inspired setting it was for the first play put on here, The Tempest. We went in the middle of the day and even then it was cold and blowy, so if you come for a performance, you would need to be well wrapped up. There's a café with great views and, at £4 to get in, it's excellent value, with the price including a small exhibition and a film about how Rowena built the theatre. If there is one thing you see in Cornwall, make this it and make Rowena Cade better known.

We visited the Minack for a childrens show from Squashbox theatre. The enterainment was fantastic, the views fantastic and the whole experience something that could not be repeated anywhere else. £8 for a family of two adults and two children is fantastic value with the added bonus of being able to return whenever you like within twelve months if you gift aid your payment.

We asked a Cornish friend which single spectacular place she would choose for us to visit, and this was her choice. We were not disappointed! Minack is a wonderful place. The cafe was small, nice and friendly, the views from our table were incredible, of course. Any negatives? Well, the air conditioning was loud! The loos were a bit chilly, but clean. The gift shop was interesting with well chosen stock. The displays about the building of Minack were interesting and impressive, particularly in terms of what one determined woman and her gardener can achieve. Well worth a visit and very good value!
