Owner description: Inspiring sea safari sailing trips aboard a ten metre catamaran, with the winners of the 2013 Responsible World Whale Watch Awards . A voyage on "Shearwater II" gives you the best opportunity to find the marine wildlife of south west Cornwall, including seals, porpoises, seabirds, dolphins, basking sharks and whales. All trips are fully guided with experienced and entertaining guides, who are trained educators. Shearwater II takes just 12 passengers and 2 crew, so you get a great view of the wildlife and the views without having to peer over other people. Please call or email to enquire. Fully licenced and insured NB please remember that sightings of specific species cannot be guaranteed and that we advertise this fact widely. Therefore the most useful and accurate reviews of our company rate us on the factors we can directly control e.g. customer service, politeness, ease of booking, quality of welcome and so on, rather than whether the reviewer saw the exact species they wanted. Marine Discovery is shut between November and March due to weather constraints and winter maintenance. If in doubt, call to check.

Being regular visitors to Penzance we had heard good reports of this trip and the catamaran.
We had great weather and sea conditions and were looked after in a very professional but friendly manner. A wealth of information supplied and every effort made to find as much of the interesting wildlife as possible. Also the layout of the boat gave everyone good visibility when something was spotted. Good to experience the boat under sail - changing from the sound of the (quite quiet) engine to a peaceful silence.
Good sightings of a number of sunfish, seals (who was looking at whom?) and a variety of birds. Fascinating to reach the feeding grounds rich in jelly fish (which we could see) and plankton (which we were assured was in profusion).
Sadly dolphins, porpoise and basking shark were not seen but that just gives us a good reason to return!
Our highlight was to see twenty or so gannets diving repeatedly pretty close to us. Spectacular.
Overall a really enjoyable afternoon.

We have been coming down to Cornwall for several years now and always make a point of taking a trip with Hannah and Duncan on Shearwater II. They are both hugely knowledgeable about the wildlife you will see and have such enthusiasm for it. It's also great to know they are doing this in a responsible manner, by avoiding interacting too closely with the animals and birds. The boat is well equipped and spacious and it feels safe even in the most choppy conditions.

If you get the chance take one of the trips that take you way offshore. Even if the wildlife is being elusive then its a great few hours being able to sail off the stunning Cornish coastline. Who knows, someday soon we may even be able to spot the Basking Sharks we are so keen to see !

Really great afternoon out with Marine Discovery - six of us - local Cornish - all sailors. And although we didn't see any dolphins or sharks - they were elsewhere - we had a brilliant afternoon. The sailing down the coast from Lands End was worth the trip alone. We did see seals, various birds, a puffin and sun fish. It was a hot day - we were in shorts and t.shirts - but you need to take a sweatshirt. Also take along bottles of water. There is a loo on board if you need it - or use the ones in the bus station before you go. So if you want to sail on a catamaran - one of our group took the helm for a while - with the added attraction of maybe some wild life then this is a great outing. Cost for four hours (we actually ran over that) is £40 which is really reasonable considering the distance you go. Very professional organisation - e.mails, instructions on where to be, safety features - everyone has to wear a life jacket including the crew, plus authorative information about the wildlife. They only take 12 passengers - plenty of space for everyone. Parking easy at the Harbour Car Park - £6 for the day which by Cornish standards is good. If you are expecting something similar to a foreign booze cruise - then forget it! Go for the sail - and don't be disappointed if the 'big wildlife' isn't around.

Fantastic afternoon with Marine Discovery. Seals, porpoises, dolphins, sun fish, gannets, shearwaters and more. We will definitely be going back for another trip.

I have never failed to enjoy a trip out with marine discovery and 8 trips later I'm still enjoyed every one. Hannah and Duncan (and other crew we've come across along the way) have always been friendly, knowlegable and approachable most of all they have always been honest and always explained sightings are never guaranteed.
Out of the 8 times weve been we haven't always seen the 'wildlife' people expect but we've always seen something be it sea birds or the view but we've always got off as satisfied as the one time dolphins bow rode with us. That enjoyment is fulfilled by the crew and the unique experience of the Catamaran. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone, and will continue to come back time and time again! (Sorry guys!) One thing I will say though...wrap up warm it's a heck of a lot colder out at sea!
Thank you Marine Discovery for your commendable service!
