Owner description: Inspiring sea safari sailing trips aboard a ten metre catamaran, with the winners of the 2013 Responsible World Whale Watch Awards . A voyage on "Shearwater II" gives you the best opportunity to find the marine wildlife of south west Cornwall, including seals, porpoises, seabirds, dolphins, basking sharks and whales. All trips are fully guided with experienced and entertaining guides, who are trained educators. Shearwater II takes just 12 passengers and 2 crew, so you get a great view of the wildlife and the views without having to peer over other people. Please call or email to enquire. Fully licenced and insured NB please remember that sightings of specific species cannot be guaranteed and that we advertise this fact widely. Therefore the most useful and accurate reviews of our company rate us on the factors we can directly control e.g. customer service, politeness, ease of booking, quality of welcome and so on, rather than whether the reviewer saw the exact species they wanted. Marine Discovery is shut between November and March due to weather constraints and winter maintenance. If in doubt, call to check.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 hr voyage with Marine Discovery. From the warm welcome over the phone, followed up with the welcome on board, Hannah and Duncan do their best to make their guests feel at ease. We were delighted that, despite there only being two of us, they were still willing to go out looking for wildlife, and with no attempts to cut the voyage short either. We saw plenty of sea birds, but sadly no seals, dolphins or sharks, perhaps scared away by an orca reported in the area. However, the thing about looking for wildlife is that it is wild, and does not operate to human timetables.... if it did, it would be a zoo.... and it gives us another excuse to go sailing again some other time. Frankly, Marine Discovery is good value just for sailing at sea.

Pointers that might help others:
* Marine Discovery is a small business operating with the weather and wildlife, so cannot schedule departures long in advance. Phone to find out, and be flexible. If they are out of phone contact, leave a message.
* It's always colder at sea: wear layers.
* It's often sunnier at sea: use sun-screen.
* Enjoy what you see, rather than mourn for what you didn't.

I wholeheartedly recommend a trip with Marine Discovery. Being out on the water in their catamaran was so relaxing, and gave amazing views of the coast and its caves and cliffs. They provided a great commentary and it was brililant having different seabirds pointed out that otherwise I would have missed and I certainly wouldn't have been able to identify! I learned loads about the birds ands seals we saw and had a great time, I will definitely be back in high season to try and catch a glimpse of a basking shark!

We had a wonderful day with Marine Discovery on September the 15th 2012 which was our 10 year old Daughters birthday and this was her gift. Our 7 year old son also loved the thrill of crawling around on the net and looking through at all the wonderful Dolphins that came to investigate what we were up to. We were extremely lucky with weather having perfect sunshine which reflected on the water as the Dolphins danced along side of us. We could have stayed on board all day and the next and the next! Hannah and Duncan were extremely welcoming and warm, full of knowledge, enthusiasm and passion which was totally contagious. Both took a lot of time with our children answering their questions and explaining so much about the wildlife, climate, coastline and history. We cant recommend this enough for a wonderful life experience to everyone. We wish Hannah and Duncan the very best of luck and prosperity and we hope that they continue to enjoy their lives offering this magic to the likes of us. Thank you so much and we hope to see you again as soon as we can. Many thanks Kathy, Ben, Neve and Alex. x

I live in Cornwall and was given a voucher at Christmas because I enjoyed this trip so much last summer and told everyone! As we all remember, last summers weather was awful, but we were lucky and had one of the sunny days with a nice breeze for sailing the boat. I had never been on a sailing boat and loved it. When they turn the engine's off and you hear the wind in the sails it's amazing! We saw seals swimming around the island, lots of birds diving in the water, and half way through when we were a few miles out we were so excited when we saw a whale! It swam right past the boat and we saw it come up a few times. Couldn't believe we saw a whale in Cornwall. We also saw some porpoises which were much smaller, but because the boat is so quiet they weren't scared and a group of them swam very close to the boat as we sat still. We could hear them when they came up to breathe. The guides were very informative and made sure everyone was happy and comfortable all the way along and because you are out there for a long time, it was useful to have a toilet on board. Thanks for the biscuits.

Such a great trip!

There is nothing more satisfying than a relaxed sail along the coastline on a sunny day in this beautiful part of far west Cornwall. The skipper of the catamaran is Duncan assisted by Hannah who give a very interesting commentary on sea and bird life, as well as being very quick to spot the wildlife as we come across it. To view the coastline from the sea, particularly around the far side of St Michaels Mount and the Minack Theatre at Porthcurno, Lamorna and Penberth is fascinating. There is so much to see.... as well as keeping an eye out for seals, dolphins, basking sharks and sunfish. I definately recommend this trip.
